First miles - Run in required?

Post by mc3744 » Fri Oct 23, 2009 11:27 am

I just got (yesterday) my brand new RS6 Avant 8)

According to the Audi dealer there's no run in (I hope it is the correct term) required, they said only to avoid stressing the car when the engine is still cold.
But no particular attention needs to be paid for the first miles.

Does anyone has different info on this?

I've read that on a lot of modern engines there is no need for a run-in period, so for this to be said about the C6 is no surprise.

Any turbo cars should be allowed to warm up properly before using full throttle to prevent bearing damage (I imagine this is even more important for turbos which use journal bearings). I usually wait until my oil temp is over 70 before putting my foot down.

This is an interesting one. My dealer said the same, you can give it the full monty from the off, however the manual says first 1000 miles should avoid full throttle.

It takes about 10 yards for the RS6's engine oil to get up to temperature! It won't let you have max power until the gearbox oil is up to temperature.

I've just asked a different dealer.
The chief mechanic says to be careful till the oil (not just the water) is at temperature, then I can enjoy the car as I like.

I never go to heavy on the right foot until oil is up to temp .. Temp is 100C and mine takes about 15 mins of town driving to get to temp..

For the first 1000 miles I was just a little more careful as well .. Occasional burst thats all .. Enjoy the car and lets have some pics of it :)

I've just completed 2000 miles and only today have I taken it to 6500 rpm. I had the same advice from the sales guy ie floor it when the oil is up to temperature.
I checked with a Master Tech and I think it has more of an affect on the car in later life if at all. The manual does advise taking it easy, the cycnic in me thought that the manufacturer would say that to minimise any warranty claims.
However, I followed the instructions like a true sad anorak although it also feels like a satisfying ritual ie delaying the gratification.

Soon as the oils warm she gets the beans :)

As G said though this can take a good 10mins.

Was always lead to believe it's "labouring" a cold engine that should be avoided... not that it's really possible to labour the C6 in any gear!!

The Italian manual says no more than 6.000 rpm for the first 1.000 km and no more than 7.000 rpm up to 2.500km.
I doesn't actually go to 7.000, does it? :?

I concur that it's probably just to cover their ... any way possible :D
