The itch is getting stronger. I've started searching online almost hourly. Every scrap of paper on my desk has finance figures and sums scrawled on it. I'm thinking about swapping my RS4 Avant for its big brother.

So has anyone else made the same move?
Are you glad you did?
I know they're different types of cars, but how different are they really?
Do you miss the agility of the 4 but forget about it every time you put your foot down?
Is it annoying to drive around town?
How much worse is the fuel consumption than the RS4 in real life?
Am I asking too many questions?

Please give me some answers.

I can't admit having gone from an RS4 B7 but from a B5 to a C5 RS6.

More space, much better mid range pull & I'd have to say a more comfortable car to drive.

However, I think the B7 is a superb fun car because of its manual box .. very flexible & smooth. I enjoyed riving it but it was down in size from the RS6 that I had got so used to, and did not have that mid range pull that is unbelievably awesome in the C5.

Still getting used to my C6 but only covered 500 miles in 2 months.

Hmmm...difficult.

For me I think the B7 is a better car - more agile in the twisties, lighter and it's manual box is great. The C6 is fab in a straight linr, awesomely powerful, but somehow lack sparkle. If you need space, and have a desire to lose your license without expecting to, then the C6 is for you. If you want to be a hooligan, go a little unnoticed, but be able to scream through the corners, then go for a RS4.

The only other issue, you can't get a new RS4 now, so they are all probably getting a little tired, yet you might be able to pick up a great deal on an RS6.

Just moved from a S4 to an RS6. Much smoother, quiter car, if a bit more bulky. Just about fits into the garage. And what a burble from the exhaust! Wanted to go for an A5, but this RS6 was sitting in the showroom and fell in love with it. Battery has been a problem though, had to have it replaced today.

Had an RS4, great car....but tiny rear seats if family involved.....drove new RS6....duller than dull.

Suggest you drive one...point and squirt can lose it's appeal very quickly when compared to the all round RS4.

Oops, I forgot I'd started this thread. I've since taken an RS6 for a test drive and think I'll stick with my RS4 for a while yet.

As mentioned, it's the rear room that's making me think about changing, but the 6 just didn't feel special enough. Big yes. Well built yes. Fast yes. Really fast.

But a quick sample of everyday driving left me feeling a bit cold. I had to keep telling myself I wasn't in a 3.0tdi.

The RS4 just feels more sporty.

The RS4 & RS6 are two different beasts. Its a discussion to be had whilst drinklng the finest ales, but certainly not followed by a road test.

Ideally I'd like one of each ... for that more nimble, more involving, "closer to the drive" experience with a manual box the RS4 is a superb motor car. Probably more suitable for driving in the cities and around small country lanes.

Equally, for that more ballistic & executive turbine power, the RS6 is awesome. Great on long motorway drives and equally sure footed along country lanes.

The C6 is a grown up C5. Much more refined, more comfortable and more rapid car than the C5. Its amazing build quality, sound proofing (apart from the magical V10 notes), excellent DRC and superb steering easily bring the driver over the speed limits without realisation.

I'm back in France today & can not wait to drive my amazing C5.

I think you've hit the nail on the head, Condor. My main use is the daily commute into W1 and the RS4 has the ability to make be smile even in stop start London traffic. The gearbox, the noise and the occasional dive for gaps I shouldn't really go for.

The other frequent trips are the ones to see the folks up in Yorkshire, usually via the twisty A1. I reckon if I got the RS6 (and deep down I know I will eventually) the more open, less involving M1 will be more suitable.

Re Mac's question, I was thinking used, but there are so many delivery mileage examples around now for not much more, I'd started considering those.

I went from the B7 to the C6 last October. In real life the fuel economy is about the same and in London overall I find the C6 better. My reasons are three fold:
1. The automatic is much less hassle in the stop start traffic.
2. The acceleration (particulary mid range) of the C6 has to be felt to be believed.
3. Much more space (I just had a second child).

Saying that the tightness and the box of the B7 make it a great car also.

One more point. I have taken my C6 to Austria driving the full length of Germany. On the autobahn the pull from 100/120 mph to the point at which it gets light in the tail (around 160) is outstanding. There is nothing on the Autobahn that comes close.

I am thinking seriously about the MTM remap when I go to Austria next month (Munich is on the way). Do you know whether the quad pipes they offer improve the sound?
