Autocar Test RS6 v M5 Touring

Post by Norrs2 » Fri Feb 08, 2008 12:27 pm

As far as Autocar is concerned, the new RS6 beats the M5 pretty easily. Says that even on a DRY winding road the M5 just can't keep up. The M5 resorting to first gear on tight bends to try and keep up on the exits and still struggles.

Says M5 in the real world can't cope with the torque of the RS6 nor it's quattro abilities at putting this kind of power down effectively.

I think pretty much most of us on here would have concluded that already!!!

Also says M5 gearbox is a howler

pity " the RS6 still hasnt got a DSG box" even though Audi has been making them for 5 years now. Even so, the paddly shifty box still leaves the M5 floundering in its wake ...

Nice to see BMW's finest get well and truely stuffed on a dry road BUT 10K MORE EXPENSIVE, is it worth it and the mention of depreciation must have prospective owners breaking into a cold sweat as they put pen to contact!!.

Dont get me wrong both are extremely capable cars but sorry but theyre all way over prices IHMO

It's certainly worth a read, although as stated above the conclusion was to be expected - both 2 tonne 'estate'cars with 5 litre V10s, but guess what, the RS6 has twin turbos and quattro... :kissmyrings:

But dare I say I think the BMW is the better looker...!

dull styling, compromised handling, great engine - not a car for me but a good autobahn stormer I guess. Bizarre they have not used DSG when new M3 will

cant get my head around the fact that a Veyron has a tranny with DSG YET Audi cant get a lesser ( by a considerable amount) model with DSG into an RS6 AFTER 5 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT

forgot to mention - I also have to say that the little insert of the C5 RS6 is a great reminder of how much better the outgoing model looks, IMHO

I would agree that the outgoing RS6 is better looking, but Clive, you must be one of those chaps that thinks Lilley Savage would do a turn if she could just remove some more stubble from her chin!

 I like that one.

2 tonnes. I thought cars couldn't really get much heavier than our 1760kg Espace but they creep up 5-10% with each model don't they ! Still each generation is faster, handles better etc. - or do they :?

Ok, lots of debate on looks, weight etc etc. But, nobody here (apart from 1-2 maybe) have actually seen the car in the flesh and certainly nobody here has actually driven it! I do think it also depends on the colour how it photgraphs and I'll bet the car has some major presence when your standing beside it. I know my ur quattro doesn't have the same presence in certain lights when photographed (and it's supossed to be one of the better colours for showing off the width/arches) but it's awesome when in the flesh. I'll guess this car is very similar!

It's seems to be accepted in what tests we've seen that the car handles/rides better than the last one and it's quicker. So lets be a bit more patient folks.

I won't be placing an order till I drive it, and IF I love it.

Is it really much faster or better than the outgoing model (510Bhp/780Nm)? Admittedly the tuning houses will have some fun with it but I wonder if it will be more reliable (DRC/tranny etc).

err...don't know what to say to this really, other than it's interesting that we've somehow managed to get Lilley Savage and 'tranny' into the same thread...

in terms of DSG - maybe Audi are using their marketing skills to their advantage again.

maybe in a year or so, a new DSG tranny will be available as a tempting option......

then there's the "Plus" version - reputably with 700 PS...!

Audi have held back tempting variants with the TT (TTS 2.0T with quattro, then TTRS with 5 cyl and 350 PS) and with the R8 (V10, and possibly V12 tdi)

could become very interesting
