Power steering leak ?

Post by alex.r » Tue Mar 18, 2025 10:48 pm

As the title says, looks like I have a power steering fluid leak somewhere where it's not really obvious to spot...
Long story short, droning sound come when slightly moving the steering wheel, also notice "oil" style patterns along the wheel arch on the driver side (LHD)
Checked the level and yeah, not much in, swallowed about 1L so far...
Drove to the garage, up on the elevator and surprise, tough to see from where it's leaking... too many hoses are "wet"

Anyone experienced something similar ?

Yes. On my car the left most hose connection to the PS cooler compacted under the hose clip allowing fluid to leak out and run back to drip off the bumper/undertray at the front of the wheel arch. The fluid took soo much road grit and other debris with it that it was difficult to work out what it was and I spent some time trying to find a leak in the headlight washers. Eventually found the source when I took the bumper off and was able to tug the hose off the cooler without cutting the crimp clip, trimmed the hose and refixed it with a worm-type hose clip. Mentioned it to a tech at my local dealership who said he'd seen similar a number of times.

Thanks Jim!
This really sounds very familiar with what I see... It will get a wash and lift it up again these days so we can see exactly from where it comes.

Have a good one in the meantime!
