Just registered as my wife and me are currently on the hunt for an RS6 C6 for her and I figured after we looked into them they need a certain amount of knowledge to maintain and be aware of when buying so this forum is a good place to join and hopefully benefit from the knowledge you lovely lot have! It keeps coming up when we search for info on them.

Neither of us are new to cars - she is a full on petrol head with a Mitsubishi Evo 6 track car and used to work and write for Speed Hunters and I own my own business building / restoring / maintaining primarily VAG cars ( Carbon Motive for those interested ) so are both fully aware of the potential costs involved.

So, that's the introduction done!

We know about the oil seal, coolant pipes, DRC issues etc so are looking for one that has proof of at least the oil seal being done as I don't fancy pulling the engine any time soon after buying one. Price range on them seems to be around 13k - 17k with a few listed for 20k all with 90-110k miles, we are aiming for under 13k-17k as that seems to be a very possible price range for what we are looking for.

Any pointers, tips, links to known good RS6 C6's for sale are welcome.

I'd say you've got the RS6 basics covered TBH. The biggest current issue that I see with these cars by now is all about their age, with cars being 13-16 years old by now, so parts are getting rarer/more expensive, rubber seals are drying out, plastic pipes/clamps/connections are getting brittle, corrosion is starting to hit etc, none of which is "RS6 specific" though and applies to most cars of this age.

My biggest advice is making sure you have "maintenance money" as these cars were never the cheapest to maintain even before parts prices jumped through the roof and without a suitable budget for maint (after you buy the car) to keep on top of things, it'll not be long before a bill worth about 25-50% of the cars value turns up.

Can't add much beyond what Ian advises, but the running costs IE maintenance and consumables are very expensive. My 4 is a Forum car with just over 20k on it when I bought it 2 years ago, it's now 62k as mine is a daily driver.

My expenditure over the last 12 months is shockingly high, the most expensive single item was a new steering rack a few months ago £3200.00. I've replaced loads of racks when I was on the tools but in over 40 years of driving never had one go on me personally, this and a front Shock which was weeping, just unlucky really.

Don't let the above put you off, my B7 RS4 Avant was faultless over 3.5 years and 75000 miles, that just needed serviced and front pads and discs before I sold it.

We've been doing a lot of research and are prepared for the costs - as much as anyone can be anyway. This is an itch she needs to scratch so it's happening one way or another, I'm so excited by the prospect of getting to do all the work on the car as it all looks and sounds such a joy to work on

Now just to find a good one.......

One "fun" thing I'd suggest - As standard the car, despite having 580hp and therefore being quite fast doesn't really "feel" all that fast compared to other cars with a similar power figure or even to the Evo, but a Stage 2 ECU/TCU map and secondary Cat "delete" from a tuner like MRC etc completely changes that whilst still retaining the cars reliability.

Something to consider when you look at cars later on.

We are looking at one in a few days so fingers crossed!

Ok so just to keep this updated as so many forum posts just end with no result.

Looked at two so far - one was lovely but had rusty coolant pipes and was a high mileage which at the moment is putting us off as it is 20k higher than pretty much every other one we've seen advertised but is still a potential good car that we may re visit.

The second one we looked at is advertised as 'immaculate' and 'enthusiasts car' well maintained etc. Photos and description, conversation with the owner and some invoices of service history sent over so all seemed good. It is priced in the higher end of the scale they seem to be advertised for. A three hour drive to it (it's located in the Bristol area ) revealed it is far from immaculate... Broken speaker grille, dash vent surround trim broken and missing, seats tatty. Then I opened the bonnet. Both rocker gaskets blowing, oil in the V, oil all over the underside of the under tray and a visibly oil soaked rad. Oil misting all over the oil tank and headlight. Breather pipes been replaced with silicone hose which is sweating oil and one is kinked to the point its a pinched right angle. Wire loom wrapped in tape, loom clips broken so plugs are just hanging about etc.

To say we were pissed at making a completely wasted six hour round trip to see within under five mins that the car is far from as described is an understatement. I didn't even bother asking him to start the car, we were there for 10 mins max.

The hunt continues.

Update - We have bought the fourth one we viewed.

We looked at two yesterday, first one was an 85k lower than average mile one with oil leaks, scuffs, faded tailgate lights and a long list of faults stored when I did a scan with VCDS. It is also mapped but by an unknown tuner.

The second one we looked at yesterday is real nice - The colour we wanted, good service history, three owners from new, no oil leaks (I'm sure some will show themselves at some point though), well looked after and an MRC stage 2 map with invoice and dyno print out proof. We snapped this one up and are collecting it next weekend.

I will do when I get five mins - we collected it on Saturday, drove it home, drove the track car to my workshop, fitted new brakes and did a nut and bolt check ready for a track day tomorrow at Oulton. Got home with that in the dark. Sunday I was out all day then at work today so all I've managed to do so far is have a passenger ride in it ten mins up the road and back!

Im hoping to purchase my dream car RS6 C7.5 finally . it has 57 k miles on her with service history . Do these cars stay reliable past 100 k miles and is there anything to look out for.Thanks in advance everyone. I'm just very nervous about the purchase , having never ran one before
