VCDS Screenshot help - Because I'm an idiot (coding issues)!

Hi all,

Can anyone with VCDS help a brother out a little here

I have "somehow" managed to screw up the coding of Module 17 (Instrument Cluster) and now my car thinks its LHD so when I open the right drivers door, on the dash the left door now shows open instead and my MPG is now stuck in L/100km etc

This is my current coding -



Can someone with an Avant and VCDS open Module 17 and on the right side click of the screen click on Coding and either take a pic of theirs or write down the numbers for all 4 lines and post it please?

Mine has a had a fault code for "No/missing basic adaption" since I can remember, and when you go into Coding helper under BIT 3 mine was set to a 70L fuel tank and FWD A6/S6 - Aha I thought, there the issue, I'll change the coding to 80L tank and RS6 Wagon, oh and whilst I'm here in BIT 1 I'll change the needle illumination too as this was set to OFF. The code was accepted but it didn't change the fault code so I tried to reset it back to its original coding but I can't, as it now says the Coding is "Out of Range" when I try i.e. out of range for this particular module/cluster.

Like a total idiot, I never wrote down the original coding and what I think may have happened is that, as well as the coding changing, I think it may/may not have changed either the workshop code or (more likely) the Equipment Number to match a LHD car as I noticed that the "coding helper" BIT numbers don't actually match the settings that are changed i.e. if I click needle sweep, it actually activates the 80mph speed limit warning instead etc so I need to fully reset my Cluster coding back to what it was originally to get back to a RHD cluster.

At least VCDS doesn't mock me every time I go back to the coding page with "WRITE THIS STUFF DOWN IDIOT" every time I look at the page

Note the instrument panel numbers - yours has a 'C' suffix, mine is 'D' - which may (or may not) make a difference.

Note that the use of 'bit' is slightly different in short and long coding.
The coding helper in my VCDS reckons that bit 5 should be a 4 for Great Britain i.e. RHD and Imperial measures. 0 is Germany and 9 is RHD Japan.
The last bit in mine is 8 which is 3 (needles on and scales on) +5 for washer fluid level warning active.
My first 4 bits are 3153. Perhaps I'm making a leap in logic here, but from the attached panel, that is 0001 (quattro), 0016 (TPMS), 0064 (advanced front lighting), 1024 (Avant), 2048 (switch for board computer). 1 + 16 + 64 + 1024 + 2048 = 3153.


Going from the 3265 of landofrisingsun's code, I'd say that his car is a similar avant but with ACC instead of TPMS.

From the same logic, 3088004 suggests that your car is set to a German (bit 5 = 0) avant with TPMS and switchable computer (16 + 1024 + 2048) without seatbelt warnings (bit 6 = 0). The last bit (4) is an invalid setting as only 0 through 3 are allowed with an additional +5 for the washer level warning.

In addition to this, there are differences in instrument clusters with there being something like 20 different units fitted to the C6 RS6 during it's short life and only the very last ones have the inbuilt functionality for needle sweeps - try to code it for a cluster that can't accept it and the resulting bit combination will do strange things if you're lucky. If you aren't, some features will become inoperable.

Cheers for the help there. That "Cluster Coding Help" is fantastic and helped me understand this way better as I deal with Binary/Hex/Octal etc for work so I would have been far better off just coding via this method rather than using the built-in "Coding Helper" and using the drop-down menu for coding instead as that seems to be "broken" in my version of VCDS.

Comparing my car, I concur with the coding Jim has and will will try using that once I finish work later tonight!

Success - Just did "3153458" in the software coding for to match my car which is 3153 for Quattro - TPMS - Advanced Lighting - Avant - Switch Computer and then 458 which is UK Car - NCAP Seatbelt - Needles /Scales On and Washer Warning and that has reset everything back to how it was before I started messing about, thanks for the help!

So, other than learning to really pay attention to the written warnings about "don't mess with coding", I've also learnt that what the "Coding Helper" is supposed to change via drop-down menus in my version of VCDS does NOT match what actual coding becomes, so don't use it.
