Front Diff Whine.

Post by IanH755 » Fri Dec 31, 2021 11:34 am

Hi all,

Well I've had rear diff whine before (stuck needle bearing - diff internals replaced) but now I'm starting to get the same issue with my "front" diff. Now with the rear diff I have a very good understanding of how everything sits internally but, as the front diff seems to be part of the gearbox, I'm left wondering about the mechanical setup of the front diff as there isn't the same sort of space available to have a similar internal setup as the rear diff does.

I also wonder how easy (if possible at all) it is to take the front diff apart enough to get access to the bearings without having to take the gearbox out.

Ah the joys never cease, happy Xmas & New Year folks!

Some more...

Of course there's the possibility that it might be the transfer box rather than the front diff.

It's been very slowly building in noise level since I got the car back from Unit20 in September and I haven't been doing anything silly as it's just been too wet/cold constantly where I live for anything other than maybe 2-3 times a month a full throttle run for 5-6 seconds. My guess is that, having been sat static for over 2 years whilst I was stuck in Saudi (COVID rubbish), one of the roller/needle bearings has seized.

Thats perfect, I now have a better idea of what the internals look like. Transfer box - Could be that too but it "sounds" (not the best metric) lkike it's under my feet rather than by the gearstick but it'll need investigating and fixing anyway.

Did you ever investigate this one Ian, or is it one of those jobs you keep putting off?

Be interested to know what you found. AFAIK There are bearings for each drive flange coupling out of the diff, there is a bearing carrying the extended drive shaft on the other side of the bell housing, and there is a large main bearing at the end of the transfer shaft providing the rotation to the front diff. I would guess that if you were particularly dextrous and inventive you could do the first three in situ with some pain, but you would need the box out for the last one

It's currently in with MRC and taking far longer than expected due to a lack of parts apparently globally however with Petrol prices as they are I'm currently happy in my little 1L Citroen C1 doing 65mpg rather than 65mph!!! :D
