Gearboxes
Gearboxes
Hi chaps
My saloon has the LLJ gearbox. I want to buy a second hand as a spare/possible upgrade and I can find KZQ and MKT types only.
Are these the same and interchangeable ?
Also would they be able to be coded in the car and work without problems? Would I need anything else?
Thanks

Re: Gearboxes
You're asking the right questions, and I'm afraid I don't know the answers, but I was in a similar situation before.
The TCU is programmed to each car. What I did was swap the transmission control unit over to the new gearbox, and that worked fine.
Of course all the adaptation settings go out the window, and you have to start again, but that's OK if you have VCDS.
Do you have an immediate problem? If in doubt, change the oil and filter and replace the oil seals to the valve block.

Re: Gearboxes
No immediate problem just thinking ahead now that some spares are a decent price. I have VCDS, but what does adaptation entail?

Re: Gearboxes
Whether you have a torque convertor or a dual clutch gearbox, automatics change gear by opening one clutch (or brake) and closing another one, and they have to be synchronised to make them smooth. The transmission control unit monitors lots of parameters including the rate of change of engine speed and adjusts the actuation to synchronise the process. This adaptation accommodates tolerances and wear, and keeps changes smooth over time, without needing periodic adjustment. When you change the clutches etc, you have to start from square one with default parameters, and the changes will suffer from snatch or flare to begin with. The TCU will adapt these out automatically, but you can probably use VCDS to re-set to default values, which may be quicker.

Re: Gearboxes
Is there any indication as to the gearbox differences between the different codes? Do we know which is an early version and which a later version?

Re: Gearboxes
I'm fairly certain that MKT was the later version,as I have an MKT in my 2010 plus

Re: Gearboxes
Hi guys brand new to this forum I have a issue with my gear changes when I select reverse all the transmission lights stay illuminated and then can’t change gears manually with the paddles until I turn the car off and on again. I also get a jolt between 3-4 gear very now and again. I have changed fluid and filter had Vagcom do a diagnostic and there seems to be a solenoid error. Just wondering if the solenoids can be changed separately without changing the whole unit.
