Front bumper to wing(fender) nuts

Post by Doug_RS6 » Fri Mar 05, 2021 4:13 pm

The two nuts that secure the front bumper to the wing. How the hell are you meant to get these on? Try as I might I cannot get them to thread on. I've tried multiple 1/4 inch extensions, flexi extensions etc and they just won't thread on.

You've got the right idea, just perseverance, a little grease on the nut will hold it in the socket while you play hit the bullseye with it. I find long extensions better than flexi drives in this situation.

I am assuming you have tried screwing the nut on with the bumper off to ensure the threads are sound?

Good luck

I even had the arch liners right off to give slightly better access. The problem it seems is the threads seem to point at an angle that is impossible to match and the awkward design of the oem nuts means they need to be quite well seated to even catch a thread. I hadn't actually checked the threads so I screwed a normal type of nut on while it was in place and it went on. Unfortunately though a normal nut doesn't match the shape of the bottom of the stud so it doesn't do the job.

Long socket and a long extension, 1/4" drive. Took me a while to get the knack - I dropped the rh nut many many times in my first attempt, sometimes I had to remove the bumper again to recover it and went through threading the nut in place with the bumper off the car to check that it actually fitted, but now it's quite straight forwards. I've got the Phaeton duct mod on my car so I have to remove the arch liners as there's not enough room to bend them back like Audi recommend.

I always take the liners off to take the bumpers off and on, assumed everyone else did!?!

No. I just need an opening to get to said nut so I remove a few of the arch liner screws, that's it.

Total pain. Just can't get them to catch the threads at all due to the stupid design of the nuts.
