Brake Caliper Bolts

Post by cammmy » Thu Jun 11, 2020 4:47 pm

Hi All

Got a slight judder with the brakes that's been there since before I had the car. Pads and discs were done all round last year, so I'm suspecting that the hubs may not be clean enough.

The manual states "Always use new bolts" for the caliper. As far as I can tell, these are just M8 x 16 with a pre-applied thread locker? What do people do when they change their discs? Get new bolts from the dealer? re-use the old ones with new thread locker? Replace with something similar (Can get m8 x 15 titanium bolts pretty cheap)?

Mine were left i tact. In case there were concerns i would’ve replaced them by oem ones.

TPS is a good source for oem ‘stuff’.

I once broke a caliper bolt and had interesting time trying to remove it, but on all other occasions I have never once fitted new bolts.

What is important to use thread lock because it protects the thread and ALLOWS you to remove them .

I refitted the old bolts. As far as I'm aware they aren't stretch bolts so as they were in perfect condition I refitted them. I think Audi and the other German manufacturers are particularly wasteful or more cynically just like to keep extracting more money from the car owners. With other European manufacturers and Japanese brands there are very few one use parts and typically the cars require significantly less specialist tools to perform basic procedures.

Nice one, I generally re-use caliper bolts but wasn't sure if these were stretch bolts since the manual calls for something like 195nm.

I'll clean them up and use thread locker. I generally use either thread locker or a ceramic based anti-seize on absolutely everything that could be an issue to undo in the future.

Thanks for the heads up on TPS.

Something else to think about regarding judder (and free to try) is that it could be uneven pad deposit onto the disc, so while the disc itself isn't "warped" as such the pad material which is transferred during bedding in etc may not be even any more giving a judder. All it takes is a re-bedding of the pads to cure this which just needs a nice quiet bit of road -

You need to get the discs and pads upto temperature for the bedding to occur so do 70mph to 10mph under very heavy braking (but no ABS activation) 8 times in a row (usually enough) with no gap between sets i.e 70 to 10 then immediately back to 70 ASAP etc. After the last heavy braking you need to give the brakes time to cool down "naturally" so drive around for about 20 minutes with as minimal braking as possible but if you have to stop then DO NOT leave your foot on the brake pedal, use "Park" instead.

Then next day take it out for a spin and see if the judder is still there, if it is then carry on as you were doing before and if it's gone then you've saved a little time/effort and know what to do when it comes back (it usually does).

There's a recent thread about replacing discs here:

Good point Ian. I can try that.

I had a read through that one Nick.
