What oil spec is supposed to be used?

So I feel like I read a lot on the subject, but I feel like I'm more confused than before because most threads seem to be about the C5.

What is the appropriate oil spec to be used for the RS6 C6 V10? (search engine keyword plug)

The only oil even close to the VW specs I've found here locally is the Motul X-Clean 5W40, which is compliant with VW 505.00 and 505.01. This is what I put during the last oil change. I do have the option of Motul X-Clean+ 5W30, which is compliant with VW 504.00/507.00.

I should stay with 505.01 5W40, right? Especially in a relatively hotter climate? Or 505.00? Or 504.00? lol

I personally use Fuchs Titan Race Pro S 5W-40 for anything Stage 2 or above with the 40 figure giving a little extra protection at hotter temps over the OEM spec of 5W-30.

OpieOils used to be on here (as a Sponsor with his own section) but it looks like they've been removed which is a shame as they gave you a forum discount too, although I'm not sure what the shipping is like to the Far East at the minute!

Interesting, but the Fuchs isn’t approved to any of the VW specs I quoted?

It’s also almost half price of what I paid for the stupid Motul ... (over here anyway!).

Taken from the website - "Fuchs Titan Race Pro S is an oil formulated for motorsport, track and high performance use. Fuchs have not therefore sought manufacturer approvals for road use, but this is an engine oil of outstanding quality and stability, exceeding the requirements of many industry and manufacturer standards."

So basically it costs a lot of money to get "type approval" and this oil, which used to be called Silkolene, is from such a well known leading motorsport brand that they didn't feel the need to spend the cash on approvals because, in their mind at least, if you're looking at their brand then you're already beyond what the car manufacturers would be using anyway.

There are two VAG maintenance training videos here that describe the RS6 lubrication system and discuss oil briefly.
I didn't have enough patience to check, but I recall the oil requirement was only VW 502.00 (in 2008 - I presume it would be 504 now):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaWU5F_4W3g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsB37yvSWRQ

With regard to approvals, VW 500.00 to 504.00 are for petrol engines, and VW 505.00 to 507.00 are for diesel engines. Higher is better. There's also 508 & 509, but I don't know much about them.

Everyone seems to be moving to 5W-30 these days; the thrust in oil development has been in reducing friction and emissions and extending service intervals, and less about protection. In my previous life it was accepted that 5W-30 didn't have enough high temperature shear strength for tuned turbo engines. Everyone used 5W-40, and I'm sure that would apply to a tuned RS6 as well. You'll struggle to find any decent 5W-40 / 504.00 oil, though. They only meet 502.00.

Fuchs titan pro race is a great oil. Unfortunately its marketed as an 'Ester' oil by a well known Sponsor, but in fact is not.

The 'S' series which has 5w/30-40 suitable for our cars is a regular synthetic like most others. The 'R' series is ester based but unsuitable grades.

https://www.fuchs.com/uk/en/products/do ... -brochure/

After speaking with a well known tuner who builds twin turbo V10 R8's, regular changes are most important. 12m/6k

5w30 Castrol Edge does the job

Well, well. So I was coming up for my new oil change, and I ordered a can of Motul X-Clean 8100 since I was going to mix that with what was left of the last bin, but I received a can of Gen2, which is no longer 505.00/505.01 compliant, but is, instead, 511.00.

What do I do now? Can I mix gen1 and gen2 Motul? Should I return it and go back to gen1? Or should I buy a new can of gen2 so it's the same oil going in?

FWIW the car is going in storage for a while, so it's going to do maybe 2,000 kms max in the next 12-18 months until the next oil change.

Oops. Just re-read the intro coe the gen2 and it says:

“ VW 511 00**
** not backward compatible with previous approval (Porsche A40, VW 502 00 505 00 505 01)”

Oops.

lol duh yeah good point re: Audi spec. But yeah, like I said, Castrol Edge 5W30 here does not include 505.00 spec.

And yes, re: 505.00, it does seem like the RS6 V10 requires 505.00 or 505.01, based on the oodles of research I've done over months the last time I did an oil change. Oddly, it does come up as diesel oil, but the discussion seems to agree that that's fine.

AFAIK VW505 is for diesel engines NOT petrol engines.

But that's "random bloke" on the internet for you..

You COULD always just look in your manual..
