AFAIK VW505 is for diesel engines NOT petrol engines.

But that's "random bloke" on the internet for you..

You COULD always just look in your manual..
Here's what a few discussions say:

viewtopic.php?t=120971
https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/t ... 07.101242/
viewtopic.php?t=92771

And so on, though the links above span the C5, C6 and C7. But all mention 505.01. So yeah ... believe me, I'm so mega confused.

That said, as I said, European and American Castrol 5W30, based on a quick check, is 505.00, which is fine (but it ISN'T 504! which is what's actually in my manual, although my manual doesn't explicitly call out the RS6 - the addendum manual refers to the main manual, which just mentions 504 for the S6).

I don't know why this is so complicated, or why I'm making it so complicated, maybe. :D

Every Castrol Edge 5W30 I've bought in the UK has been 504...

Like I said, listen to "random bloke" on the internet, what could go wrong? Like you repeatedly mentioning 505 even when it's been pointed out to you it's for DIESEL engines....

Well, hang on. If you want to poke at my internet sleuthing skills, let's hear your reasoning in return. Did you actually look at any of the links I posted? In them, people say things like "It is recommended to use a 505 01 diesel spec oil to offer RS6 engines better high heat stability and protection." and "RS6 requires VW 505.01". In my manual, there is no RS6-specific section, so considering the A6 and S6 engines are completely different, I don't think it's necessarily valid to read into that too much. So, weak as it may be, my logic is backed up by the above posts. What exactly are you using as reasoning to support your 504 claim? Please post some logic, whether it be a reference to the manual, or Audi spec sheets, or at least something besides "I've been using it for many years", I'd be very happy to hear it as I obviously posted this thread looking for advice, rather than criticism.

[edit] and btw, just saying "Castrol Edge 5W30" is inconclusive. There is Castrol Edge 5W30 LL (which is 504), A3/B4 (502.00 and 505.00), FE (nothing), SN (nothing), US (American standards), etc. So yeah, just saying, even referencing a manual saying "Castrol Edge" as if it were gospel would not be exactly helpful.

Thought I had already made it clear

I've always used Castrol Edge 5w30, as per Audi spec

Ie 504

Ie what my manual says to use on page 285

Ie what Audi will tell you to use if you call them?

But, again, you crack on listening to "random bloke" on the internet saying to use 505....

I'm out.

A quattro GmbH engineer doesn't seem like a "random bloke" to me.

Though amusingly, he does say 504 is a "decent substitute" for 505.01 because 505.01 is hard to get (but they designed it with 505.01).
