Audi RS6 C6 avant 2010 tailgate latch not opening

Post by Tygris0101 » Wed Mar 18, 2020 10:12 pm

Just joined so my first post.
I have a 2010 avant c6 rs6 with power tailgate. When I operate the remote, boot switch or door release switch the tailgate tries to unlock. It raises 10-20mm then tailgate pulls shut again.
I've tried the manual release through little inspection hatch on tailgate but it won't release.
I've since unbolted latch from tailgate to get tailgate open.
I then unbolted striker and have them off the vehicle.
I suspect the latch has a mechanical fault as even off the car I cannot separate latch from striker.
Anyone had this issue? Will I now have to break up latch to get access to mechanical lock mechanism to release?

It almost sounds like a low battery voltage issue. Have you tried while the engine is running?

I don't know if it's something configurable or standard, but my tailgate won't open from the outside while the engine is running. Seems sensible to me.
Although similarly the latch does seem a bit iffy - sometimes it opens correctly, other times it'll unlatch, lift a fraction (probably the same 10-20mm) then shut to the first position on the latch. When it does that it generally takes 3-4 attempts to get the thing open properly.

It's configurable, mine opens with the engine running no problem.

I've had few cars with power boots. What often fails is the pneumatic struts. They lose pressure over the years and don't take the weight. Not easy to diagnose as they don't fail completely, they just get weak over time.

Fixed the issue. Manual release wouldn't work. Stripped off tailgate trim completely. Unbolted latch from tailgate got tailgate open. Unbolted striker from body and tried to separate them off the vehicle.
Didn't work so fitted them back on vehicle. Re connected electrics and operated remote while pressing/kicking tailgate. Finally got it open. Turns out tailgate has previously had a broken window and had little pieces of glass in tailgate. A bit must have got into latch when closing and jammed it.
Cleaned and greased latch and removed as much of the broken glass as possible. Left trim off as some glass in centre of boot I can't get access to behind skin. Hopefully a few corners will move it to accessable points.
There was no issues with car battery. Just latch jammed.
