Acceptable wheel sizes?

What are some appropriate wheel sizes that fit well? I’m currently on a set of 20” 8.5 ET40s, I’m considering either going with a set of 19s or a set of wider 20s (I have 275 rubber on mine, and I think that’s a dumb way of wasting rubber on relatively narrow wheels).
What dimensions and offset are known to fit well?

275 is the wrong size for 8.5" rims

Yeah I'm discovering that. The guy who owned the car before was an idiot, it would seem (that, or he went to a tire
Shop who looked up OEM tire sizes and just slapped 275s onto the wheels, without considering whether they fit or not).
The rubber is basically brand new, but the edges are cracked - I'm guessing because they are stretched, or who knows. I'm going to look into getting a new wheel set between now and when the rubber wears out, but I completely agree it's WAY too wide for these wheels.

A good rule of thumb is for the tire to be about an inch wider than the wheel.

Yep, I agree. I didn’t actually know they were 8.5s until I looked up the model number, haha.
Hence my question. What widths and ETs fit the C6 RS6 well? I don’t want to do spacers, and I would prefer a nice and flush look, so I want to be careful.
Do the offsets of the S6 match? The front and rear track seem to be the same, so maybe I can check their forums too on what fits?

My 20" X 10J et32 sit very close to flush with the arches, going of the wheel fitment website 20 X 10.5J et25-30ish should also fit, but I'm not sure how much clearance there is on the strut side to give an accurate estimation

Thanks. What size rubber do you run on that? Any pics of the fitment?

275 35 20, it's the standard fitment for OEM 9.5J but fits the 10 with a minimal stretch, 285 would probably provide more protection but might also scrub

They're 20" but can look small due to the design, very lightweight though

Oh very nice. Love OZs, have the Ultraleggeras on my Mini!
In the meantime I think I’m an idiot - I looked at the ATS Racelights (which is what I have) and it turns out they make them in 8.5 but also in 10 and 11, so now I have to figure out what I have (don’t have a jack and spent a few minutes taking pics of the other side of the wheel and couldn’t find the specs, but considering the tires don’t LOOK stretched, I don’t think it’s an 8.5 after all). But at least once I figure it out, considering I like the current flushiness, I know what size / offset to look for.

I would say if your tyres are 275/35/20 and you have a similar looking lip/stretch as mine then you've a 10" wide wheel
Going off an offset of et35 for the 20 X 10 of your wheel I imagine your wheel is tucked in by about 3mm compared to mine?
If it sits much farther in then you might have the 8.5 wide. With your offset of 40 your wheels unspaced sit 27mm in the arch which is A LOT!
