Kick Plates

Post by Jim Haseltine » Tue Aug 20, 2019 8:23 pm

OK, how do the sill kick plates come off? I need to remove the side skirts so I can deal with paint chips on the leading edge of the rear wings but can't get the kick plates off. Would I be right in thinking that there's a load of doouble-sided tape under them?

Yes, you are correct. Some heat together with plastic pry tools does the job.

I need to do the same! I was wondering this also, are there clips too that need to come off.

I also damaged one of the clips that holds the lower door trim on by closing the door on the hoover hose. So the rear end of the drivers door isn't fixed down tight anymore. Does anyone know if you can buy the clips? I can't find them on the part finder.

Plug “Audi/VAG door trim clips” into google and a thousand links will come up. Buy more than you need; they’re fragile little b’stards and tend to break fairly easily.

I buy things like that in tens or twenties - especially the plastic expanding nuts that are used all over the place. How many do I need? 2. I'll buy 10. End up actually needing 11.

Oh yes, there's double sided tape under there - my god is there double sided tape. Two strips the length of each kick plate and another strip the length of the side skirt. The high temps over the last couple of days coupled with 11 years of use meant that it actually wasn't too much of a struggle once I'd worked out where to pull and/or lever. There's another 5 or 6 retaining screws along the top of each skirt.
