does anyone know what the dreaded oil seal part number is

When I got the pump off mine it looked like it was the seals at each end of the shaft cover that were leaking but the one at the chain drive end was much the worse of the pair.
The one that usually leaks is N 904 608 01 (chain drive end) which is now a wallet busting 77p, the other is WHT 003 731 (pump end) and is £10.66.
The chain drive seal had been cooked to hard plastic and broke into a number of pieces when I removed it - luckily I'd removed the seal cover so none of the pieces went into the chain drive. That did mean that I had to clean off a load of sealant and the reseal when I put it back.

When you take into account all the other seals and bits & pieces that it's sensible to replace as part of the job you're looking at well over a hundred quid in parts. You CAN (just) get the pump off without removing the engine but putting it back is near impossible - there's a solid water pipe between the water pump and block that's hidden above the pump which you have to get perfectly aligned before everything goes back together - it's a little easier if you have the LH exhaust manifold off and can release the air con compressor bolts enough to allow the pump to be moved around a bit - but not much easier.
