Agree... and re performance (cars) and / or spirited driving (irrespective of make / model), i'd only recommend to use premium brands and tyres that are designed for desired level of "fun".

That aside and braking wise, RS does give me confidence with speeds of up to 145-50mph... anything above that is either a risk (on one own's peril) with stock brakes. Ceramics is apparently way to go but i haven't had chance to try them (yet).

I recall a conversation with a Michelin engineer a couple of years ago, as I was asking what the top speed was of the MPS4S, almost every answer to my questions was "the tyres are rated to 186mph sir" :jump:

in all honesty, having seen 201 on the digital display once, I have not felt compelled to go back up there since, 160mph usually deals with most scenarios. Even when I hit the 201 mark, i didn't fancy touching the brakes, opted for a casual decline by lifting throttle and coming back down for the next 2 miles :)

When you do the sums, the centrifugal forces that the tyres have to withstand make you stop and think. I did the calcs once ( I used to go around weighing tyres for this reason) and I can't remember the numbers, but I do remember they were remarkably large. The tyres simply have to be very strong.

Tyres are complicated things, and I don't think anything about them is bleedin' obvious.
In your post on Sunday you said the biggest threat was temperature, so is that the obvious limitation then?

To put some numbers on it, centrifugal force = MVV/r where :
M = 10kg
V = 112m/s
r = 0.31m
Centrifugal force = 402,910N = 42,071 kg - 40.5 tons.
I thought that was a surprisingly high figure considering each tyre only has to carry around 800kg.

You obviously have no sense of humour.

You must be a hoot at parties. :biggrin2:

PS the temperature thing was read from a tyre expert website.

Not today, no.

Today I diagnosed the aircon fault on my Merc S600 down to a completely inaccessible broken connector pin at the rear of the compressor, and a few minutes ago I exchanged contracts on my daughter's flat after six month's financial and conveyancing nightmare.

So tomorrow will be a much better day.

Thank you!

Funny you should say that (not that I'd recognise a funny thing even if it slapped me in the face with a kipper and played my nasal hairs with a violin bow) but my daily driver is a 3C Passat TDI estate that recently blinked it's ABS & ESP lights at me.

Then on the way home yesterday, they all mysteriously disappeared.

talking of Passat's, my dad's B6 is few miles short of 200K miles... apart from wear and tear items and couple timing belt changes, it is as sound as one can be... sometimes, simplicity matters!

Well, (not going too far off topic) my 160k mile Passat replaced a 150k mile Mondeo, and the difference couldn't have been plainer. By every measure the Mondeo felt like it was at the end of it's life, while the Passat (flat paint and an intermittent speed sensor aside) feels like it's at the beginning.

I've owned about 30 cars, and some are very obviously built down to a price (Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot etc) and others are clearly built well (MB, BMW, Volvo ).

Despite all the specs and design being a virtual carbon copy of the Mondeo, the Passat is definitely in the second group, and gives me better confidence in VAG cars. My family has only owned Fords and Mercs for several years now, but I feel like making a wholesale switch to VAG cars. No, they don't steer so well, but there's a lot more to second hand car ownership. It feels like my Mercedes days are numbered, and a stage 2 RS6 with gearbox map is just round the corner (he says, getting back on topic).

Maybe a very powerful engine might have the power, but you'd have to wonder if the wheels bearings and differentials would overheat first?
Nick
I need to retract the comment about the differentials overheating.

According to Audi SSP 385 & 431, the RS6 has individual water-oil heat exchangers for:

Engine oil
Gearbox oil
Centre & differential oil

Rather like the Veyron. That lets me sleep easy.
