The wheels and tyres tend to act as a torque limiting clutch that tend to protect the downstream elements of the transmission, so I'd expect the upstream elements like the gearbox input shaft to be more at risk with such a high-torque tuned engine. From a simple minded perspective, the front driveshafts only have to spin the wheels, which any A6 engine would be able to do. Just thinking out loud, if the traction control is intervening in a low gear, that might cause the brakes to fight the engine with the transmission stuck in between, and something would have to give. The "torque-limiting-clutch" thing wouldn't work. It's kind of worrying.

Nick
Would appear you were right, driveshafts are fine. Upgraded gearbox has failed, shipping it off this week for inspection. I’ll report back once I know what’s happened

Damn, sorry to hear that. I wonder if you had the same failure as Ian H last April? There was one other instance as well, can't remember who. Maybe there's a pattern emerging.

Snapped input shaft is the guess at the minute, will keep you posted

No idea it was carried out by sportmile in Poland. It’s being sent off for billet upgrades now, symptoms were loss of drive.

@S4Player - oh okay - it's annoying :(

So I had reinforced all clutches + 1 extra, inputshaft, special oil etc. And then after 5000km the "intermediate" shaft snapped - no 4-5-6th gear anymore...so - I suggest to reinforce the intermadiate shaft too - I did now...

Who built your box? Sportmile have told me the new upgrades will be a lot stronger. I will ask exactly what there planning on doing

Getriebe-Doc Germany...I have / had Stage 3 inputshaft etc. Just the intermediate shaft was OEM..was a mistake not to reinforce that too...but I thought why should I - never heard of an intermediate shaft failure...now I know. :bash:

Funny how people can run a stage 2 tune up to 1100Nm with a stock gearbox without a problem.

But when they go to stage 3 and 1200Nm and an upgraded gearbox they seem to break?

Chains only as strong as it's weakest link though

Most of the boxes which have been upgraded seem to be detonating from an area which isn't as well reinforced as the others it would seem.

Have to agree, this new upgraded input shaft seems to be a new thing

This is what i'm trying to get my head around.

I'm planning for a stage 2.5 type of set up, ie...bigger turbo's & uprated IC, DP's etc...but stock exhaust system + stock gearbox & plan to limit the set-up to Max 850hp / 1100Nm. This should give me a nice linear power curve and a flat torque curve from 3k rpm to redline, which isn't possible with std turbo's and IC...but yes...the question i have is will the stock gearbox cope, given that uprated ones seem to go pop with a set up less than 100hp / 100Nm difference to what i'm planning.

Mines failed due to a ‘double downshift’ it’s happened a few times hence the new billet part becoming available. At your power levels I think you’ll be ok as long as your not launching the car

I’d add a water meth kit to that too (Aquamist hfsv3/4). But don’t get it mapped in so engine relies on it, more just to aid cooling. If the engine is coming out i would upgrade the box. You’ll have a reliable 900ps car.
(As reliable as a car pushing 1/3 additional over stock can be)
MY09 C6 AVANT 843bhp in progress
MY10 C6 SALOON MRC 775ps
MY15 D4 S8 MRC 676ps
MY14 F10 M5 DMS 748bhp
MY10 C6 RS6 SALOON MRC 719.9ps

JD Engineering tuned an RS6 stage 3 TTE1000 to 973 bhp / 1065 Nm.

I presume the boost was held back to work with a stock gearbox.

There are quite a few stage 2 cars with stock turbos and 'boxes that make that kind of torque.
