CTEK battery charging

Post by bal » Wed Feb 20, 2019 4:45 pm

I've not been using the car much over the last couple of months and the last few times I've gone to use the car I've had to jump start it to get it going.

I'm looking at getting a CTEK MXS 5.0 and keeping it on a trickle charge when it's not in use. I was just wondering if you can charge it directly on the battery or do you need to use the terminals under the bonnet?

Thanks

As Daytonamart says: Do not connect directly to the battery, use the terminals under the bonnet

Can anyone explain why you have to connect under the bonnet rather than directly to the battery?

Thanks.

There's "surge protection" circuits between the car's electrical system and the charging points in the bonnet to prevent surges during connection from reaching the cars electrics but there's nothing between the battery and the electrical system so it's "potentially" possible to cause an issue if you charge directly via the battery.

Mines connected to the battery in the boot using the convenience link, no issues in 1.5years. CTek doesnt go over 14v, the alternator charges at 14.4v

I have the comfort connecter as well so I was hoping to connect it directly to the battery but I didn't want to risk blowing any electrics in the process.

Mines in the boot, very convenient.
Positive on battery +
Negative where battery grounding stud
Cable stowed away by the aux socket
