Snapped rear spring

Post by c3nturi0n » Sun Jan 13, 2019 2:02 am

hiya,

and hope you all enjoyed time off during festive season... offside rear springs is snapped on my car and i'm contemplating on the idea to replace potentially all four with H&R equivalent with standard OEM height (as opposed to OEM ones). Any thoughts or suggestions?

or should I keep it simple and stick to OEM springs and replace both rears (incl. the bump stops as those are also showing sign of wear).

Pls advise (and thx).

It depends if you want it lower or not really, that's all.

H&R's provide 30mm drop which will add to stiffness on an already stiff suspension :)... so I guess my follow up to this would be - if I was to go ahead with H&R springs, can I retain existing shocks? and with replacement in mind, anything I should consider re DRC?

Retaining Shocks - Yeap, the H&R's fit over the existing DRC shocks and, as you siad, will further increase the stiffness of the car (possible negative) whilst the lowering looks better.

Anything Else - There's no aftermarket Camber Adjustment kit for the RS6 and the OEM doesn't have enough adjustment to fully "level" the tyre so you WILL wear the inner edges of your tyres faster than a n OEM height car, it's a very common complaint on here about lowering.

You can correct camber to some degree with this kit:

And caster with this kit:

Thats great, I think that needs to be advertised a bit wider as I know a few people were put off lowering before.

Cheers guys that's super useful.

as suggested, I think we should do the sticky with this thread to assist other users if/when lowering their cars.

FYI - it turned out to be false positive.

Mis-diagnosed by local Audi specialist due to lacquer peeling off on the rear spring :)!

Just to chuck my 2 pennies worth in, I did have a snapped rear spring and have just gone for the KW height adjustable spring kit, paid about £725 for it but had to be shipped from germany so expect a 4-5 day lead time if ordering direct from KW UK.

With regards to height settings, as a rough guide to get a 1 finger gap between top of tyre and arch you need to max out the rear spring adjuster so the purple adjustment ring is flush with the bottom of the threaded part. For the front about 20mm between the bottom purple adjuster and the bottom of the threaded part.

Seems I have had a broken spring for a while so hard to get an accurate comparison but the car feels a lot tighter now :-)

ignoring the state of the car, photo to show ride height of the KW setup. rears are wound up as much as possible, fronts have 20mm between the top and bottom of the adjustment collars
