RS6 headlight bulbs

Post by Toady1 » Fri Nov 30, 2018 4:10 pm

I'm looking to upgrade my pretty poor headlights. I've done some searching on here and found EM Tuning aka Trups, but nothing on here shows anything he's done on the c6 rs6. I've not got my manual with me so asking here to hopefully get some answers as I'm not 100% sure I've found the answer online. Sutodoc llist D2S and D3S....

Do we have D2S or D3S bulbs?

I've found these after some googling to apparently be the best upgraded bulb. These are the D2S version.

Also to replace the bulbs is it a bumper off and headlight out task?

Thanks.

My review of Trups Quad-Headlight conversion - viewtopic.php?f=47&t=120057 - long story short, absolutely amazing but can be pricey however that shouldn't put you off, they are phenomenal!

Thanks for the replies, yes during my search I did come across your thread Ian, but I was hoping for a more simple bulb swap solution for now.

Pcorpe - did you go for just bulb upgrade? If so, can you remember what the bulbs were? actually now I'm home I can check my manual! ha ha! tut!

When I bought the car first thing I did was to replace the bulbs. I opted for Osram Xenarcs Cool Blue, 5.5K.

Much better than std ones (at 4.3K)... but I must stress out that RS's headlights (or lenses) are not the best out there. Super complex - I get that, but I think that they should've done better job considering the status, price tag etc. that RS's have.

Interim solution - bulb replacement (for minor improvement and mainly aesthetics if that matters to you)
Longer term - Trups is your man.

Hope that helps.

I think the problem is that although the bulbs do dim over time, the lenses in the rs6 are also not clear and appear to suffer from condensation which dries out and leaves a cloudy lens which doesn't help. The best way around it is to fit new clear projector lens and new bulbs from morimoto. I'm guessing this is what Trups does.

I have a set of Trups headlights in my RS6 - definitely recommend him/them - he also rebuilt my headlights - wires had frayed - probably due to the heat/humidity here in Hong Kong, replaced the drl's which had failed and fitted sequential indicators which work well and aren't to gimmicky unlike some of the latest Audi's (in my opinion). The D2S version is upgraded. But D3S bulbs aren't considerably worse. It all depends on your budget.

Oh, good luck! I wanted to change the bulbs at my BMW last month, and it was such a loss of time. Neither auto service had my needed products. As you have two options, you'll probably find them quickly. D2S and D3S bulbs are popular enough. I wish replacing the headlight would be as easy as replacing the lightning in the house. Last week I thought about changing the lighting. Today I already have a box of amazon light bulbs. They are energy savers and easy to control. As for my car, I'm still searching for headlights...

Lamp ratings of 5.5K and 4.3K refer to the colour (temperature) of the light output measured in Kelvin; 5.5K is right at the top end of neutral (closer to white) than 4.3K (heading towards a yellowish light) - but neither guarantee which is brighter than the other. Light colour is unrelated to lumens output measured in lux, although the whiter light may 'appear' brighter, it is not necessarily so. The down side of a whiter light results in more glare in foggy weather. Just thought Id drop that one in and share the knowledge.

And yes its a bumper off and lights out

Thats the only negative with my Trups modded highlights, they convert the front fog lights into another set of headlights so when you are in a real pea-soup fog and need to switch the rear fog lights on, you end up with all 4 headlights on which can be a bit of a glare issue.

Happily I've only had a once but this was a proper "20mph is still too fast" type fog.

That's what has put me off the mod - not that I can remember the last time I needed fogs. Pity that the extra HID isn't shuttered like the existing one - the shutter could be operated by the high beam sense - HID is powered with the shutter in place when the fog is on, then powered without the shutter when main beam is selected.

Just to clarify there Jim, you would want it to be powered but with a shutter closed so no light escapes with the Fog Light switch On and then for light to escape "only" when High beam is selected? If so, that does make some sense.

Currently mine acts exactly the same as the OEM headlight next to it, with it being low beam when the headlight switch is set to "Headlight + Fog" and then high beam (along with the OEM headlight) when you select high beam and I mostly drive (95%+) with the Fogs Off unless I'm specifically on an unlit A/B-road in the countryside (where I live right now) where I'm mostly using the extra lighting for high beam rather than any additional low beam light, which is why your suggestion makes a lot of sense to me.

That's it. As I've never seen one in the flesh (so to speak), from what I'd read I'd assumed that the Trups mod was simply (!!) an unshuttered HID that is powered up when main beam is selected.
From your description it seems that the setup is they way I'd like to see it - the new HID is powered with the shutter in place by the front fog switch (so the fog light is actually a low beam) then if main beam is selected the shutter drops to give you 2 x HID from each light.
Sounds like I should investigate further and spend some money.
