Winter tyres
Winter tyres
hi guys,
i'm contemplating on an idea to take my RS to the Alps during Christmas break... one really qq re tyres. Would it be worth going for 275 40/20's instead of original 35 fitment for "extra" comfort?
Assume this is / will be safe to use on Quattro so long as all 4 x tyres are of same height?

Re: Winter tyres
275/35 = 96 (approx). 275/40 = 110, so the tyre wall will be approx 14mm higher (depending on make and model as all tyre sections are nominal measurements).
You could well get some rubbing at the back especially when loaded and at the front on full lock.

Re: Winter tyres
And it should go without saying (but I will) the speedo will under read by about 4%.

hahah ... that's a nice one.
reason why i'm asking is that 35 profile are tad challenging to source at acceptable prices and I have a hard time convincing myself to spend a "grand+" on something I'd only use for single trip to the Alps. Hence the ask for 40 profile that are somewhat more cost-effective (but with caveats that you outlined Jim).

Re: Winter tyres
Could try a 265/40
Re: Winter tyres
thanks Doug.
Wonder if anyone tried 265/40 20's and how do they fit to a car?

Re: Winter tyres
Dunno, but I'll tell you this, once you've driven with winter tyres you'll want to fit them in this country when the temperature drops. The grip is amazing compared to summer or all weather tyres. There are downsides though, they don't last long when things get warmer and they're usually rather noisy on dry roads.
Re: Winter tyres
I've probably said this before, but I find the best method is to have a second set of wheels with winter tyres fitted.
Smaller diameter (assuming the car brake geometry allows this) with deeper tyres to maintain the same rolling radius.

Re: Winter tyres
Not much other than std would fit RS tbh... hence the ask to see what options if any are out there.HPsauce wrote:I've probably said this before, but I find the best method is to have a second set of wheels with winter tyres fitted.

Re: Winter tyres
265/40 is 106mm - approx 10mm higher than a 275/35 sidewall.
Re: Winter tyres
You will lose some of that 10mm though as the sides pull in giving a more rounded sidewall.
Re: Winter tyres
Guess car won’t loose much on stability and performance etc.?

Re: Winter tyres
I wouldn't of thought so. I mean they compound and design of the tyres will be the most obvious change.
