How clean is your oil after service?
How clean is your oil after service?
Quick question, I've just had my car serviced by Audi, jst checked the oil and my oil still looks quite black. I'm wondering how thorough a job they've done. Tempted to do it myself again now they've stamped the book!

Re: How clean is your oil after service?
The oil system doesn't drain completely. Even with a 5 drain plug model there's at least a litre left in the system when it's been drained. A 2 plug model has nearly 5 litres in it when drained if I remember correctly.
Re: How clean is your oil after service?
Yes but even so that still leaves another 6-7 litres to dilute the left over oil. Mine looks proper black still. I'll check it again after driving it to work tomorrow. I did just check it after coming back from being away from the car for nearly a week. Apart from getting underneath the car and checking myself how do I know if mine is the 2 or 5 drain plug model? How can it still have 5 litres left in it????

Depending on manufacture date the car can have 2, 4 or 5 drain plugs. The first few had 2, the next had 4 and the later ones (Model year 10 I think) had 5, so the later the model, the more drain plugs it has. Mine (2008) has 4 that I've found, I've looked around the area where the 5th would be (I think) but never located it. The parts department at JCT600 give me 5 crush washers whenever I order the parts for an oil change though.
There are a couple of Audi RS6 Engine Service Training Information videos (rather badly dubbed in English) on YouTube somewhere, I can't remember if it's part 1 or 2 that explains the lubrication system but that's the one that gives information about how to change the oil and how much is left in the system when drained.
I'm not saying that your service centre did the work properly, just that there are reasons why the oil never looks too clean even after a change.
It takes a long time for the system to drain - I drain it, pump out the reservoir, then loop around refitting the plugs, do something else for 10 minutes, go for coffee, open the plugs and drain again, repeat. An oil change takes me around 2 hours to the point of refilling - not counting removing the undertray - and I rarely get more than 6-6.5 litres of oil into it.

Ok thanks Jim for the reply. I'll be doing an interim one myself as no way would I let the oil last 10k let alone 18k in a turbo'd car!

Re: How clean is your oil after service?
Resurrecting a 6 month old thread....
I'm in the process of dealing with THE oil seal. Drained the oil this morning, same as I would if I was changing it. Did some other things then went back to the oil this afternoon. Went around the drain points again and then pulled the 3 hoses from the right side of the thermostat - that's both oil cooler hoses and the hose from the oil tank. I got another 700ml of oil out. There's still the other tank hose, the pipe between the thermostat and the pump, the oil pump and what is hanging around in the engine, so I'd reckon that 'at least a litre' left in a drained system is an under estimate.

Re: How clean is your oil after service?
For the reasons outlined here, I do more frequent oil changes (every 3-4k miles).
Don’t know if I will do any justice to it or get any benefits overall but at least i decided to do that for added piece of mind. And to comment, my oil is generally slightly off the colour of the original one when it was last serviced. On the other hand, when i did gearbox service last summer that looked like crude oil (@100k miles).
Hope that helps

I'll be doing mine again soon. Is there a guide on here? As its a dry sump system, with my Tuscan it wasn't so straight forward, and I want to make sure I do it right! I assume it is simply filled up via the reservoir where the dipstick is?

Yes, fill through the dipstick hole. A funnel is highly recommended.

And... far more than a litre in the pump. Difficult to say how much as some is on me, some is on the ground and there's close on 2 litres (estimated) in the drain pan.
Re: How clean is your oil after service?
LOL, you're not supposed to wear the oil
