Picked my beast up yesterday.
RS6 plus.... it needs 95 ron....

I’m hearing I should be using the Shell V power....

What’s your thoughts and reasons?

I imagine there is no real "should" behind fuel choice, I know for a fact my RS6 was run on regular unleaded (95) for 160,000 miles, with the occasional tank of super (97) however unless you're tuning it for v power you'll be totally fine running it with regular unleaded!

Definately use V power, it costs a bit more but you get more miles per tank so works out the same as cheaper fuel cost per mile, but with the benefits your engine will be cleaner and run better with the higher octane.

In sweden we dont have less than 95 octane (91 ron ). We do have Shell V power 98 but i dont see/feel any diffrent at all except that its quite more expensive.
Been running 95 ( 91 ) in my non optimized 580HK for ages.

The ECU uses different maps depending on the fuel it detects (probably from knock sensor information). On boggo premium (even supermarket stuff) mine is a pleasant but fast car for normal driving which will really shift when required but on V-Power or Tesco Ultimate it's a beast, almost undriveable around town if I do anything other than just look at the pedal.

Ive used both standard 95 RON and V-Power and clocked the mileage from several tanks full of each - there is no noticeable difference in mileage gains from the V-Power to make the higher cost worthwhile. I call this shell claim a maketing ploy. There might be a gain if you drove like your grandma but then why would you do that in an RS6. There is a noticeable (but minor) response improvement from the engine using the premium fuel. Im not convinced its worth the extra cost though if thats your only improvement.

If you wanted to maximise this improvement to make that extra cost worthwhile you need to take your car to MRC and get it tuned to the fuel you use (typically they tune using Tesco 99). They can tune it for economy or performance. Ive never heard of anyone tuning an RS for economy, but some claim that tune for their insurance cover. I'm asuming mine is still stock but I dont know for definite, its not been on a rolling road with me. Although I have been tempted to do so on several occasions...

Here's something else for the mix (no pun intended) I stumbled across on the ever enterprising Google

"Occasionally, some filling stations will confuse these different octane numbers in a bid to embellish on their octane rating claims, and advertise their fuel’s Research Octane Number, which is higher than the Road Octane Number. In many European countries, the Research Octane Number is advertised on pumps, so a much higher octane value is common when travelling in certain countries."

I'm running a very unscientific test. My last tank of std Tesco fuel got me to 255 miles before the 'Please refuel' message appeared, this time I've filled with Momentum 99 and will be covering the same routes until I refuel. With standard at 123.9 and Momentum at 127.9 I reckon I'll need to get to 270 miles to break even.

Lol but less fun power lol worth losing the 15miles for

When you have 500bhp + under the hood and for avg. ride that most of us do weekly i doubt that where u source the fuel from will make much of a difference. Something that i know for the fact is that s’market fuels are more cost effective as they do not use additives that conventional suppliers do hence cheaper price.
