Turbo replacement

Is this an engine out job on these or can it be done in situ?

There is a car on ebay for sale with suspected turbo failure. Seller says it is down on power and he can hear a rattling coming from the LHS turbo, so he thinks the impellor is snapped and rattling around! I'm not too sure how this could actually happen to be honest...

The only way to truly know would be to bring in knowledgeable mechanic to "diagnose"... there are not many around that do truly understand BUH engine tbh.

I'd also ask myself a question is it worth (the time, poteantial hassle and everyhtign else about it).

I though the same as it could have damaged the engine if it has managed to suck bits of the turbine into it. Also this is just his description form his 'Audi' mechanic, it's too far away fo me to bother with tbh. I was just wondering if the job of replacing the turbos was an engine drop job or not.

IMO, other than filings, bits from the turbo could only get into the engine from the 'cold' side of the turbo through the intercooler or from the 'hot' side backwards via the exhaust manifold and exhaust ports. The second is more likely but even that would need some very bad luck.
I've been digging around under my car a lot over the last few weeks. The downpipes are possible - just - with the engine in place I reckon but the turbos? Very little chance unless you have access to some very specific tools which would probably be useless for any other job. Though if anybody know different I'd be interested to know how it's done.

Hi its engine out for the best way of fitting the turbos.
Done mine 6 months ago replaced both turbos and timing chain cam belt and new down pipes. The problem is the turbo oil feed pipes on the left hand side a bitch to get to even with engine out. Took me 3 weeks working on and off when is wasn't at work. If you're going to change one turbo might as well get the other done as same time.
I got the Bentley service book on download its like Haynes manual gives you steps to take engine out a lot of steps mind but possible. Hope this helps

What mileage would your car be on? That's a very big job and now I'm worried about the timing chain of my own car as the engine was just dropped to repair the oil seal and coolant lines, I'd been told none of these engines had ever suffered timing chain issues.

Mine just turned over 100k the chain adjuster need changing so while doing the adjuster done chain as well. While engine is out you might as well get other jobs done at the same time. A garage was investigating a miss fire on my car and forgot to put cover over my inlet and dropped two jubilee clips down them and didn't say nothing gave me the car back in a worst case than I sent it in still going through court at the moment. So had to change my turbos. The way I found out was I brought a endoscop from ebay and looked down inlet to turbos and sure enough one turbo eat the jubilee clip all inside the intercooler and the other turbo had one jammed in the turbine that's why I work on my car myself.

And there was supposed to be audi specialist ha ha
The mechanic even took my VCDS USB cable and tried to palm me of with his. The arguments I have had with them is unbelievable.
