I'd go by what is on the plate - casting numbers are often inaccurate to say the least. It may well be that the same main casting is used for a number of types of 6HP boxes.

I think the answer is that the C6 RS6 'box is both - a hybrid of '26 and'28.
Mechanically it's a 6HP26, and electrically it's a 6HP28.
That's my best explanation for the confusion.
Audi did say at launch that it had an improved TCU with smoother and faster shifts, like the '28.

Definitely a 28 just the casting it says 26 when I bought it they didn’t check the tag on the bottom because you couldn’t see it was covered by dirt.

I think this is very early 08 box just on the casting it’s wrong they are all 28 just like the bmw boxes around that time changed from 26 to 28

I posted pictures of the '26 and '28 boxes here:

They're quite different.

That’s not a 26 and 28... a 26 28 look very similar the zf6 family does not look like that that looks like a newer 8 speed out of a c7

I just checked my photo archive - it's definitely a 28.
It's the 6HP28 and the 8HP that look alike.
Here's another picture of a 6HP28:

And here's a picture of an 8HP65:

The back end of the 28 and the 8HP are also similar, and different to the 26.

It may well be from the 28 in the B7 3.0 tdi, but none of our c6 gearboxes look like that 28 they alll have different torque converter

This was a bit scary, took all 19 bolts off the transfer case and it wouldn’t budge 116,000 miles all original unopened it was stuck on after slowly working it with rubber mallet it came off but be careful there will be oil still in there and the big metal gasket and the almost circle looking one and the small round one coming off the shaft

Yup. That's because, mechanically speaking, they're all 26's.
