Fault code help

Post by Adam1411 » Wed Jul 18, 2018 2:05 pm

Came to start the car Saturday morning and just didn’t sound right and the pedal moved but the engine didn’t register the pedal movement so got the car code read and I’ve got the follow diagnostic
Control module malfunction- DBW throttle monitoring
P1388 - 008 intermittent

I’ve done some digging on line but not really coming up with any soloutions. Don’t really fancy starting buying parts for the sake of it
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated

It may be worth doing an adaptation of the throttle valve modules on VCDS.

I think that you can also log the positions of the throttle valve modules using the measuring blocks in VCDS.

And if you're doing that I would log the throttle position sensor readings also to see if everything looks normal.

I don’t have a VCDS reader I got some to come and do it for me might invest in a VCDS reader and try that

What code reader was used? If you have a specific code from it you could probably narrow it down to the pedal sensor or throttle body.
VCDS scan should give you that detail and enable you to monitor movements of pedal sensors and throttle body.
As noted above an adaptation would be a good initial step; can that be done on this model without diagnostics tools connected?

I don't think it can be done without a diagnostics tool being connected. On ElsaWin it states that if renewing a throttle valve module, then an adaptation must be performed using VAS 5051.

VCDS is a very good tool and well worth the money. For the price of the 3 VIN version of VCDS, you'd probably not even be able to get any garage to perform an adaptation on your throttle valve modules, let alone take logs of the position sensors for the throttle valve modules and pedal sensor.

It was a VCDS reader that was used. Think I’m going to invest in a VCDS myself and see if I can narrow it down

VCDS can do this looking at the label file for the engine 1 ECU and engine 2 ECU attached, but I've not tried this personally

It comes under blocks 060 onwards extract below, taken from 07L-910-552-BUH1.lbl

I've done it on older FBW engines and IIRC block 62 shows both the pedal and throttle body readings, with expected ranges.
They both have dual sensors that work in opposite directions.

IIRC there's a button to click on in VCDS to do the adaptation for you, with explanatory text.

I played with all this years ago when I was having some weird power-fluctuation problems; turned out in the end to be due to a maladjusted brake pedal switch operating on a hair trigger!

Here is a link to a video explaining how to carry out the throttle valve module adaptation on YouTube by Ross Tech.

They have lots of videos that help with using VCDS.
