Front crankshaft oil seal

Post by Underachiever » Mon Jun 25, 2018 9:13 pm

I've owned my rs6 for a month now and I've noticed a very small drop of oil on the floor. I've removed the under tray and it's coming from the front of the engine. It's over the back of the fans leaking down onto the oil pump. I've cleaned it up, run it up, but can't see anymore leakage.
Looking through the service history, the last service carried out by unit20 mentions a slight leak from the front crankshaft oil seal. It does look to be around that area.
I'm going to attempt the job myself, along with the help of my brother-in-law, who's a mechanic. I've so far removed the front bumper and cross member. Just waiting on getting my spines back to drop the oil and start removing the rads.

Does anyone have a link to a workshop manual or could give me any advise of any potential problems I might come across?

Once you have access its a simple enough job. You will need a spline bit for the bolts, M10 I think, and a T60 Torx bit for the aux belt tensioner. Definitely consider replacing that aux belt too .
The book says replace the bolts; 8 off ; they are torqued diagonally in 3 stages to 15Nm then 22Nm then plus 90 deg; and use locking fluid; I'm guessing not everyone relaces the bolts (I do)

D185410A2 Locking Fluid (which is straight Loctite 2701)
07L903137M Aux bet (which is a 5 peak 945mm)

The book uses a few elaborate tools but you dont really need them

Also consider the tensioner and idler pulleys, particularly if yours are noisy, but the tensioner is some 120 spondoolies!

I will dig out a couple of images

Thanks for the images but I beat you to it.

Why have you had your engine out?
