track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
Hi all
I have had my RS6 for a few weeks now and am loving it, but am struggling to exploit anything like its full potential on the road
So my question is do any of you plan to do any track days, Vmax days or even trips over to Germany for some Autobahn pounding? I am keen to have a good fun safe day/ weekend out with some like minded souls.
I have done a number of track days in other cars and find that it is always more fun with a collection of similar cars.. I also have a hankering to do 200mph in Germany while it is legal (that can't last for ever).
thanks for reading

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
Hi Robin,
Have thought the same, need to find someone in the forces that can get a runway track day green lighted so we can dick about away from the public, I have a mate thats looking into it but he's currently dealing with a 6 month posting in the Falklands, should get more info in May when he's back.
However in the mean time, the beauty of these cars is how quickly they get to silly speed and how quick you can stop again to avoid any potential reprimand, just saying
Cheers,
Rich

Thank Rich.
i am having fun with the car and i am sure that i will make it over to Germany soon to have a blast. a runway would be fun. it will be great to have a play in safe and legal conditions.

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
I tried when I was still in the RAF and the public liability is crazy, with St Johns, fire cover, insurance etc, so it's extremely difficult. I think the RAF only allows 1 "RWYB style" track-day a year and thats at RAF Marham and only because it's for charity.RS6-T28RPH wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 4:57 pmneed to find someone in the forces that can get a runway track day green lighted so we can dick about away from the public.
However a "disused" runway (rather than one which has planes land it) on an Army camp etc maybe much easier to sort?

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
You could try Bookatrack.com.
Within 10-15 miles of me there are maybe a dozen disused or near disused airfields, only one of which (Elvington) allows any sort of motor event - thanks young kids dicking around (usually at night) the others now either have the runways blocked or use private flight use as an excuse to turn down such suggestions.
Elvington has harsh sound regulations but some of the newer locals still complain - they'd have loved it when I lived a mile from the place; the Renault F1 team used to have regular test days back then.

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
Sorry. I have been away for a bit, unavoidable issues. Back now and the sun is shining... who is thinking of booking a day in the near future? I am going to classic Lemans in July and am thinking that i could have a little squirt on the Autobahn when across the channel for that. I am wondering what sort of top speed my car should do? it is MRC stage 2 engine and gearbox.
one other question... how loud will my car be for track day? I have fitted Milltek resonated boxes to quieten it down a bit, the non resonated pipes were really annoying during a recent trip to Holland (I ended up driving most of the way home in 5th as it was slightly less unpleasant).

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
Anyone have any idea what a Stage 3 C6 will do through the lights at Elvington?
High 180's?

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
It depends on how Elvington run their event TBH.
At VMax using Bruntingthorpe the cars head off down the taxiway first to build up speed before swinging around onto the runway for a 1 mile acceleration, leaving about 0.8 miles from braking. This allows cars to hit the runway at 40-60mph+ already which "boosts" the final figure vs doing just a straight 1 mile acceleration from standstill.
If I had to guess based ONLY on my own cars performance at both Stage 2 and Stage 3 I'd say this, which might be surprising to some, all based on a 1 mile straight drag from standstill -
Stage 2 - Straight 1 mile drag - 190mph indicated so 185-ish timed (based on the video of my speedo when I did it and my own GPS timing gear).
Stage 3 - Straight 1 mile drag - 200mph indicated - only based on a guess of my experience as it's pretty rare to get anywhere to do that speed legally.
The issue is that Stage 2 cars tend to be mapped to 7000rpm, which means that you enter 6th gear at 206mph, but my Stage 3 car is mapped at 6500rpm which means entering 6th gear (which has virtually no acceleration compared to 5th) at around 190mph. So you get to 190mph way faster than a stage 2 car (like 5+ seconds faster), but then have to use 6th gear to go 190-200mph which crawls in comparison. Now I could ask MRC to move the redline for me, but that would ONLY been an extra cost for the incredibly rare times you can hit 200mph (I only did it once in my stage 2 car) so unless I was doing something else with my car, like for example ditching the KWE intercoolers for the new Wagner ones ( ) which would need a remap anyway, then there would be little point.

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
So me and R33 hit up Elvington today.
Exactly as you said Ian.
I ran 198 indicated through the lights which proved to be a 187.4.
On a subsequent run, I kept my foot on the gas a fraction after the lights and saw 201 indicated. Still in 5th inspite of what the image shows. It must have been imminently about to shift up, or rather as I rolled off the gas, it actually shifted up...
My car redlines at 7200.
Great day out.
Looking at previous days, and of course I accept I have no idea what conditions were like on those days, the old girl can still outdrag a 720S over the mile which I find astonishing for a 2.2T, 12 year old, 100K car!
Guy Martin was there with Project300 running 250 on half throttle.
Too much crosswind component to beat his 275 today....

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
Good skills dude, keeping that foot in
How was the wind noise by your right ear at those speeds? That was the "scariest" part for me when I did 200+ as the wind noise on my car at 190-ish "suddenly" got very loud, like a window seal pulled away but I also kept my foot in

Re: track days/ airfield days/ Autobahn runs
I didn’t notice any big difference in wind noise going through 190.
Ran with the mirrors folded in FWIW.
I’m fairly sure I have enough space to hit a genuine 200 at Elvington but for the guys braking from the high 200’s, the lights are in the right place!
