coolant pipe repair/replacment in surrey/hampshire

Post by moss » Thu Jan 25, 2018 3:13 am

so after 1 week of ownership i get the car back from inter service to be told a few bad points, one being the dreaded corroded coolant pipes, once pointed out to me they do look bad :(
i know my indi wants to whip the engine out, but i hear of people either repairing them or replacing them without engine out, can anyone recommend or point me in the direction of a garage in the surrey /hampshire area for this work to be done ?
bang goes the remap, think i need to sort the mechanics side before i dabble with that..
thanks in advance..

Corroded coolant pipes do not require an engine out, your indi mechanic is either inexperienced or worse a crook. The tyre needs to come out so does the arch cover, the pipes can be fed through and can be accessed via the top of the engine.

'Crook' is probably a bit strong and there aren't that many places that are experienced with these cars.
Yes, they can be done without dropping the engine but it's not easy - my local Audi dealer uses both, the method used depends on what else needs sorting and which technicians are available.
I did mine without removing the engine and spent considerable time struggling to work out how to get to the hose connection at the heater end of the long pipe and considerably more time (best part of a day) getting the connection apart.

Hello mate,

Depending how far back they have gone, MRC in Banbury charge circa £660 for the wheel off fix, and QS Tuning in Sussex can also fix without engine out not sure on cost though. Hope that helps bud.

Might be worth asking these guys on a cost? Based near Gatwick.

I got sort of suckered into the job.
When I asked, the local dealer said that although they preferred to drop the engine, they had changed pipes without doing it a couple of times so I thought "If you can do it, I can do it".
Not realising that some of the independent jobs were fixes rather than replacements had me thinking that I really could do it.
If I had to, would I do it again?
Probably. I wouldn't be happy about it, but probably.
But then a lot would depend on my health and fitness - I'm hoping that the powder coat I had put on the pipes lasts either for the life of the car or to the point where I'm too old to drive anymore.

Hi, I had my pipes replaced by PMW Motors in Epping, Essex, in December 2017, for around £800 including original parts, very happy with their work. They said it was a hell of a job, with the engine in situ, but it was done. MRC quoted me £3000-4000 in 2017 for the same job, engine out, which they said was the way they did it. Unit 20 in Liverpool cut the pipes and replace just the corroded sections, engine in, and considerably less expensive than MRC (who I have great respect for by the way). So it is possible to get someone to do it with the engine in, but is a tough job, especially if they are doing it for the first time. I have to say I feel lucky to have got it done, as was finding myself watching the temperature gauge all the time in case the pipes let go while I was driving. Small hands are an advantage apparently, tackling this job!

If you go for the wheel off and joint them near the rack it’s 2hrs max. It’s easily DIY’able

They are indeed. I had to take a break of a day during the job because my left hand had swollen so much that I couldn't reach the far end connection. My forearms aren't big but I have now have a scar that covers approx 2 square inches.
Replacing the small pipe is easy, it's the long one that needs either a lot of work or cutting and joining.

I saw your car on Wednesday when I was at the Phirm. I’m in there tomorrow for new carbon ceramic front pads and new rear wiper on my C6

You’ll not go wrong with Tim and Paul, they’re certainly not crooks as someone tried to imply earlier!!! I’ve used them for last 15 years and a straighter, more honest garage you’ll not find.

Vass-Tech in Whitchurch did my coolant pipes and oil ring seals. I would recommend them
