Residuals

Post by 801 » Sun Aug 27, 2017 1:07 pm

Hello

I am sure this is not a new topic, but I am trying to figure out what sort of loss I would make as soon as I buy an RS6 Avant. The sources of valuation online seem to disagree.

For example, have just seen one advertised @ £19k, 100k miles, 2008, unadulterated, 1 owner. Part-exchange price, according to one online valuation website, is £16k, so I stand to lose £3k just by looking at it, i.e. if I had to sell it for any reason.

According to the same well-known valuation website (who can you trust?), year on year, i.e. from 2008 to 2009 the part-exchange price goes up by around £4k so the car, with an independent dealer would be a £23k car, and 90k miles.

2009 to 2010 the part-exchange price increase by £4k on £26k car, 80k miles, etc.

Some have suggested that an RS6 would not depreciate very much but that is still 15% year on year, or do you all think that now Modern Classic has declared it so, that prices will stabilise?

Obviously, selling on RS246 gets somewhere in between part-exchange and independent prices, but I have to consider worst case.

From the same source, depreciation on a '12 S6 is reckoned to be at around 17%, so £4.5k on an £23k car. I was expecting an RS6 to be better than 15%.

I am not sure my source of valuations is particularly accurate, though. A 2008 RS6 avant, 53k is on at £28k? A 2013 S6 Avant with 80k miles is £27k?

Where would you go for a reliable valuation?

Firstly if you're thinking of £ then you're buying the wrong car. It's very high maintenance which requires ££££, as a comparison a part for an a6 will double or even triple for the rs6. So consider all this when buying the rs6. Not trying to put you off buying but making you aware. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks

I suppose that's why I am trying to figure out what the depreciation is really like.

It's worth getting things done IF the car is worth something at the end of it.

I know buying any car is a bit of a mug's game from a point of view of losing money, but what I don't want to do is end up buying something that's over the odds. Better to have some money in the pocket for that ££££ that you say I will have to pay in the long run.

Is a £28k 2008 RS6 avant, with 53k on the clock good value, compared to a £19k 2008 RS6 Avant with 100k? I could save the £9k for the ££££ that I will undoubtedly need, or would a £28k 53k mile car need £9k less work doing to it?

I have just been through the buying process and scooped a relatively low mile 2009 with 58k on the clock. I used the audi.co.uk website to "value your car" which gives out CAP (Car at Auction) valuations. The problem anyone has is no car is at auction, not my trade in and not the one i'm buying from a dealer. Dealers I found wanted CAP +£6k for theirs and to give you CAP+ £zero for yours. I managed to haggle and got a great deal but as said above I exepct to spend lots on the car and if I ever dont then thats to be viewed as a bonus. Get one that has at least had the Oil Seal done as this could be a £3k+ job.. and yes as soon as you've bought it you would get offered £6k less maybe so buy with intention of keeping. Over 100,000 miles for me is a bit of an unknown but I will probably keep it in the family, assuming my lad can afford the maintenance!

best of luck with your search

I am under pressure from the other half and work uncertainties to look at a 'normal' A6 (normal being the V6 3.0 TFSI, or the V8 S6), with a budget of around £22K now.

The chances of finding a 'bargain' are slim. A bargain is when you buy a car for £17k and lose 10% per annum rather than 33% in less than 18 months as I have just done on a fecking diesel!

In other words, I would rather have spent £10k on keeping a good car running than losing £10k on one I don't!

Get a higher mileage RS with an Audi warranty. Then you will only have to pay to run insure and service it.

Based on Considered1's suggestion, found one that is CAP + £7k on an '09 with 53k.

If you're buying a car purely based on residuals then I'd say you're buying the car for the wrong reason.
Obviously it's a deciding factor when purchasing any car as you don't want to buy over the current market value.

From what I've read above, it sounds like your budget is going to buy you a car with high mileage so you need to be considering the preventative maintenance it will inevitably need. Such as bushes, wheel bearings, maybe a DRC refresh and big service.
Obviously none of this may need doing but as you previously said, think worst case scenario.
Fuel is a big factor as well as these things love a drink.

If anything does go wrong, do you have a slush fund that can cover it?

Just my 2 pence and good luck with whatever you decide.

Don't worry about residuals they are all reasonably strong. You will loose on every car if you look at retail vs trade.

Higher mileage cars can be very good buys mines on 91k but they are for sale in Germany with over 150k on.

I would but a higher mileage vehicle that's had everything done , oil pump o ring , coolant lines , bushes, recent discs ,recent tyres
As this will save you a lot of money in the term of your ownership as most of them are a thousand pounds or over to do.

I am not an accountant, no. I am trying to figure out if any RS6s on the market at the moment represent good value.

For instance, the one on at £27,495 with 53k miles is 26% over CAP, according to Audi's valuation website. What would a reasonable offer be on a car like that? 15% over CAP. 20%?

There is a '12 S6 that's even worse at over 33% over CAP. Probably why it's not shifting. They all seem well over priced imho.

I am used to spending money on fuel, and tyres. The S6 was hardly frugal and we always bought two sets of tyres (winter and summer).

The C6 RS6 is quite rare, there were only 31 for sale in the whole of the UK when I was looking for mine 3 years ago. Some people price them on their rarity I guess.

At the end of the day, it's worth what your willing to pay for it/they're willing to accept.

Possibly why quite a few are languishing on auto trader unsold after several months. I am not willing to pay 26% over the odds given that tomorrow they would give me 26% less than I paid for it, scarcity or not.
