RS6 V10 Rattling noise engine bay

Post by rs6danbar » Sat Dec 17, 2016 1:22 pm

I have a RS6 with 130k miles, engine has only gone about 50k.
Noise might been there for ever and it doesnt always develope the sound.
Almost sounds like a camchain rattle, most often when the car is hot, oil being around 100 C*. It also makes it more intense when i turn the steering.
Been having the rattle for last 2 months as far as i know, discovered it when happend to open the door before engine was shut off, not being better or worse, no lights are on and car runs as new.
I know the 5 liter V10 ticks alot but this noise comes from below the engine.
My power steering has been making weird sounds as long as it been in my belongings.

I know several VAG engine have camchain problems, but never heard of camchain problems on the V10 :audibash:

So what do you think, is it my power steering thats living on the edge or am i looking at a 3rd engine drop for new camchains and tensioners? :bash:

I cant see it being cam chain/tensioner if engine is as you say only on 50k.... but it depends how long the engine was left dry, the tensioners require to be oil filled, there's a great case study on the C6 on Ian's website.
Without a video or something to go on i cant really say, powersteering is normally more of a whine/squeak than a rattle. (usually)

I hardly doubt that aswell, as i noticed this weekend i didnt hear the noise even once, might just been some loose heating shield or something?
Oh well im just gonna keep on rolling, car runs great :)

PS racks can rattle, usually when the pre-load is incorrect. The one sided sort of rack as used on Ur quattros and similar age Audis can be prone to it although it is rare. On post 1990 cars Audi added a preload adjuster - I retro fitted one to my MB to cure an annoying intermittant rattle. There's also the posibilty that it's a hose or pipe that when it's warm is flexible enough to drum on the body, especially when you consider how much has been packed into the engine bay.
A couple of weeks ago I was talking to the Parts Manager at York Audi and he mentioned that they had recently changed the rack on a C6 - if I get a chance I'll drop by and see if I can find out why.

What about cat converter? they're 131k miles old by now.
I still today have the rattle, no engine lights, no loss of power, and it still only appears sometimes, never at cold starts..
Usually appears after 10-20min of driving, can disappear in a secound.
Rattle follows the engine speed.

Might get it checked out just to be sure anyway.
