Coolant pipes
Coolant pipes
So where exactly are the pipes that I read so much about? I had a look behind the driver-side arch liner and couldn't see anything only hoses, are there any pictures somebody could upload please?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

You need to remove the inner wheel liner. Then from the coolant bottle there are two or three rubber hoses. Two of the hoses connect to the metal lines these go through into the engine bay. You can see the coolant bottle in the attached picture.

looks nice! So is it just the visible bits in this picture to worry about?Jim Haseltine wrote:And the rusty bits

'Just' is a little word. That's where they rust the most, but they're like icebergs - you can only see 10% of them....
Re: Coolant pipes
I need to strip my arch lining back and have a look but mine don't look bad.
Although I am trying to figure out a way to protect them from the elements and that should stop it happening again
But that looks oem as possible

Epoxy Mastic 121 two-pack from Rustbuster. It's messy as hell to mix & apply and brushes are best treated as sacrificial but I've not found anything better available to the public. No isocyanates so none of the usual two-pack issues.
Re: Coolant pipes
To be honest I was just going to try coat it as you say then literally cover it to keep th weather off it and what ever else gets flicked up , something like a bit of a bike inner tube or rubber hose

Re: Coolant pipes
maybe if Audi had of extended the arch liner a little these problems wouldn't even exist

Re: Coolant pipes
No, they'd still be there - probably earlier because the liner would probably trap a paste of water, grit & stuff against the pipes.
First thing anybody would know would be when a pipe lets go, at least with them exposed you can see the condition of them. I suspect that with them being fixed to the body in the arch stainless pipes wouldn't be a great idea because of the vibration they'd have to cope with. Maybe a flexible mount could be used?
