I had a quick look at elsawin for the Official procedure, did you do any of the following? -

Drain Engine Oil
Remove LH Wheel
Remove LH drive shaft
Drain Power Steering Oil
Remove Radiator (bottom)

All of those are extra bits Elsawin says you MUST do to be able to do the job :D
drained oil
removed both wheels
removed radiator
coolant housing and front of oil pump not the complete oil pump manifold! if i had not found the source of the leak i would of removed the complete
oil manifold.
This wasnt a part failure as there just wasnt a seal there at all.so either from factory,or someone did a coolant pump and did not put the seal in.
Also ive never worked on this type of car before so there was a fair amount of sussing out time involved for me,didnt realize how much goes into these cars,no wonder there £100,000 grand new...

I had to LOL at the "Remove LH Driveshaft" as when I looked at 'why' it needed to be done there was no reason other than "maybe" extra access.

Unfortunately for 55chev his o ring was completely missing but is this oil leak issue in our rs6's avoidable?
I know additives are not everyone's cup of tea and I don't particularly like using them but on my old stage 3 b5 s4 I used Liquimoly Oil Resealer for approx 2-3 years each 10k service.
The idea is the additives don't thicken the oil but keep seals supple so the don't dry out and crack.
Liquimoly is a fairly reputable Brand and I never had any issues using the product don't see why there would be any problem using it on our cars either?

Our cars are all now getting to the age where, with the ridiculous heat generated in our engines, seals are starting to fail so anything which can prevent that would be good however I've not personally used Liquimoly so can't say how good it is.

I mentioned this before

I had to put in 1 litre of oil in the first 2 weeks of ownership (2.5 years ago). My car had "misting" around the oil seal (as described by audi to avoid an insurance claim!)

I then discovered Forte seal conditioner.

I did some research, including calling Forte's research dept.

Forte explained to me that the additive is chemically inert to the oil and engine but basically re-conditions any rubber it comes into contact with.

I put in 2 at each oil service (depends on amount of oil in engine) and for the last 2 years my car has basically lost hardly any oil.

1 tiny top up I can remember in the 2 years

Forte seal conditioner is trade only to buy (in the UK anyway) but you can buy it on ebay

I'm sorry to say that I had the same problem with the race track shaped seal, couldn't get one so had to part with £2500 for a whole new oil/water pump assembly from TPS. If you can find the racetrack seal it would be an epic save! My 2008 C6 has done 123k miles and things like the oil catch can return pipe and these oil pump seals were brittle or failed :-(

UPDATE

My first initial diagnosis was incorrect,i first thought there was an o ring missing on the coolant pump shaft, but this turned out to not be the case,i noticed that there was a void in the oil pump housing and also a machining relief in the housing which got me thinking,if a seal was supposed to be in the groove on the shaft it would be void because there is a void in the casting,so my conclusion was it wasn't supposed to have one there, then i realized why they also had put in a relief in the housing,ITS A FAIL SAFE,so if either of the seals fail it wont pressurize the front coolant pump seal and force oil into the coolant system,so as either seal fails it just fills the void then works its way out through the relief and basically drops oil onto the floor. so here are some pics for anyone who has oil dripping from this area, will know what there getting into,im just awaiting the o ring for reassembly of the car,ill let ya know how it goes,i ordered a EPDM 3.53mm o ring 105mm I.D to get around the race track seal not available part from audi,RS6-T28RPH :)

Here is the machining relief bellow.

Here is the casting void.which goes nowhere.

Image
Here is the seal and o ring on the coolant pump shaft which seals off the oil
from the oil pump.i ordered a new coolant pump,@£350 bucks :( The coolant pump is driven via a hex driven shaft from within the oil pump.
Image
Coolant pump fitted in housing, you can see the machining relief clearly which you cant see when fitted in the car.
Image
Measured race track shapped o ring,2.95mm then oil pump housing machined o ring depth, which was 2.90mm,whiich means o ring has almost no crush, which is due to age and heat,.o.5mm is about .004" thou, ive ordered a new o ring with a .015"- .020" thou crush with a 70 shaw,in EPDM.

Just be aware that the first application can take up to 500 miles for it to work. I noticed after about 300 miles. Good Luck, and great stuff your posts.
