Oil Leak drip drip

Post by 55chev » Sun Nov 27, 2016 8:36 pm

Noticed tiny drop of oil on my garage floor,so on ramp pulled the drip tray,on the front passenger side front there is oil dripping from area in pictures,my question is can this be fixed with engine still in car,and what is possible cause, oring or gasket, not sure if this is the area that everyone talks about on these cars the dreaded oring engine out job.this was after cleaning the whole underside of the car,as it was totally caked in oil and grime.2009 RS6 V10.ANY ADVISE MUCH APPRECIATED

It's not the 70p gasket oil leak which is at the back of the engine block, but that is the oil pump that's leaking in your pic, well where the coolant pump meets the oil pump anyway.

Yeah the pump can be dropped but it's still a whole lot of work to disassemble the car around it however it's around 1/2 the cost of an engine drop instead so worth it!

So decided to have a go,removed front end, swung it round to the passenger side,so i could keep aircon pipes conected,as to not need it refilled.
Image
found accesory belt nakered and idler wheel bearing gone also
Image
removed coolant housing
Image
coolant pump sits in front of oil pump, this is where oil was coming from
Image
you can see oil where it shouldnt be.
Image
oil pump,seal is hardish,will replace!

Image
And heres the culprit,o ring missing on coolant input shaft, you can just see in the picture below theres a groove with no seal on it,cant believe this has been like this from factory, but who knows

all seals and o rings have gone hard so will be replacing all as necessary.

Great work there, that o-ring can only have been mising from factory, unless the coolant pump had been removed before?

As a bonus - I'm happy I got the diagnosis right too, phew! :D

Yeh thanks for the heads up Ian,waiting on parts ,just gotta put the thing back together now, gonna take my time as its easy to miss something :) one of the o rings was £12 ,cant see how they can justify that price, god knows what a main dealer would charge for this job! Get the feeling this was like this from factory.

Bet the words 'engine' and 'remove' would appear on the invoice.

I'll have a look on Elsawin tonight and see what the Audi procedure for a coolant pump change would be :D

good job !
should be better now ☺️

RS6 ph2 have MMI3G and large rear lights... and normally no oil pump gasket issue.
let us know !

I KNOW MINE DOES HAVE MMI3G,and i was also told its an engine out job,due to the amount of work involved with this procedure.

It's "easier" to do the job with engine out but it can be done with the engine still fitted and costs about 1/2 as much too.

I had a quick look at elsawin for the Official procedure, did you do any of the following? -

Drain Engine Oil
Remove LH Wheel
Remove LH drive shaft
Drain Power Steering Oil
Remove Radiator (bottom)

All of those are extra bits Elsawin says you MUST do to be able to do the job :D
