Dreaded oil leak

Post by Geedub » Sun Nov 06, 2016 3:39 pm

I returned from being away for 8 weeks, oil light came on when driving and topped up about 0.5 litre and when I returned to where it was parked there was a nice oil patch on the road .Its still under Audi warranty so phoned Carlisle and I've to drop it off on Tuesday.

I'm assuming this is the dreaded oil seal problem .

My main question is if the engine is coming out , what other work should I get done at same time? ....all gaskets and cooling pipes?

Cheers

As this is now quite a common issue there's a whole host of threads covering other peoples experiences but the basics are usually -

1. Coolant pipes behind the right front wheel behind the arch liner.
2. Oil Pump Seal (normally the cause of the leak).
3. Any other gaskets found during the engine pull (sometimes the rear rocker covers leak).
4. Check the turbos for condition (oil leaks, damage to blades etc).

Thats the basics, others have done more/less so have a check of their threads using the search engine.

Agreed with Ian above, do some digging around as this question comes up nearly every few weeks now.

So far -touch wood-my car hasn't suffered from this as yet. Approaching 62k miles but I feel that only a matter of time. Hopefully will happen before I go to MRC for a stage 2 and FB tune as after that I will probably knock the Audi warranty on the head (another subject of much discussion here!)
Having said that I spoke to someone who has a 2004 C5 RS6 that bizarrely has its original DRC with zero issues. Strange but true.

Ok thanks for the quick replies, I'm not shy of looking and searching for other threads but information can always change . Hence why I'm aware of this problem, if we all googled and searched then I guess there wouldn't be a forum .

Absolutely, but as above, search and ye shall find, especially as this sort of question comes up every few weeks, nothing much would have changed, if at all. Happy searching :)

I dont think i've had this yet... unless its already been repaired once, i assume so as its on 84k now and i've had her since mid 70's

I thought i had the dreaded leak recently but it turned out to be one of the sump plugs had split its washer so oil was seeping past (at an alarming rate) leaving an oil stain on the oil pump side making me think it was the plug.

The only way i found out was by removing the undertray and after having the car sat for a week after cleaning the underside i'd noticed it was dripping from the plug.

TomRS I had a similar experience and as it turns out one of the clips for the coolers had become loose and leaked an alarming rate of oil everywhere. I must have leaked atleast a litre if not more. Got the undertray and we spotted it in time. It was heart wrenching to say the least. I will be looking to replace that clip and others in due time eliminate those problems in the future.

Had the opportunity to get the carbon a ramp today and my underside is looking issue free (touch wood). Also got some sealant sprayed into the coolant pipes to reduce the gathering surface rust.
