RS specialist in the North East

Post by Nosillad » Thu Sep 22, 2016 7:47 pm

Hi

Picked up my 2008 RS6 avant a couple of weeks ago, I live up in Newcastle upon Tyne and wondered if anyone could personally recommend a good independent specialist who has experience with the C6?

I had a Audi inspection last week after it dripped oil on the garage floor, I have had a Porsche for the last few years, so I'm quite used to this, but Audi diagnosed a leaking seal on the timing chain housing and have quoted for an engine out job to replace.

Whilst it's not exactly what I fancied two weeks into ownership, at least I can get everything else replaced whilst it's out and start as we mean to go on, but a lot like Porsche, Audi charge a fairly high labour rate and I've always preferred the more personal approach that a decent independent can offer.

I've read a few posts on here about Unit 20, but Liverpool is still a fair hike so wondered if people had experience of anywhere closer to me?

Thanks

Craig

Without having all the necessary details in regards to the oil leak, unless it's already had the oil seals change, I would strongly recommend finding out as the C6's are plagued with this manufacturing defect and almost everyone on this side of the forum has had to change it at one time or another, so get the full work history on your car in the first instance.

From what I can acertain so far there is no evidence of the oil seals being done, I have a service history but the car has been through a couple of company books so the paper trail is none existent.

I had the £60 audi inspection done at the main Newcastle dealer who stated it requires (Oil Leak from engine timing case- requires engine removing and timing cases resealed 25.7lab), so I'm presuming this is not the oil seal issues?

I had a tray under it last week whilst away and it leaked 9mm of oil so it's by no means a major issue, but I'm a great believer that oil should be in the car not on the floor :)

I hadn't considered Revolution for an engine out job so might pop down tomorrow for a chat, anyone on here actually had theirs done by revolution?

I'm guessing that whilst the engine is out its common practice to have all the seals done as a precaution? Anything else I should do as a matter of course whilst it's out?

It's the oil pump seal between the block and engine driven oil pump. It goes "hard" due to age/heat cycling and no longer seal so you get a leak at the rear of the undertray, slightly to the right.

The seal is about 80p and "technically" the work can be done with the engine in place, it's just harder for the mechanic to do but it does cost about 2/3 of the engine out price.

However if you drop the engine you can also do the coolant pipes behind the right front arch which are starting to fail due to corrosion now with very little warning.

Those two jobs are the "usual" repairs and shouldn't need doing again for another 6+ years.

I'd say go to Unit20, if you follow them on Facebook they do several of these leaks a month. They also have a loan car so your sorted!

I take it yours is a private purchase and no warranty? It's been a subject of much discussion here but the Audi warranty will sort the leak only if it's an engine out job.

Yes it's a private purchase so no come back or warranty.

Spoke with a couple of places today but I was most impressed with Unit 20 so it's going to get booked in there for the work.

Thanks for all the feedback

Next job, (or first given the wait for a slot) is wrapping the chrome trim Matt black.

Yes I've gone with a Matt black 3M 1080 film. It arrived today so I'm going to have a go tomorrow, wrapped a few things before and for £40 of film it's a good saving on the labour of someone else doing it.

Car booked into unit 20 for first week in November.

Swifts Motor Engineering at Westerhope are the best NE VAG independent IMHO - they look after my RS6 and few others in the area. they have all the correct VAG kit inc the test and pressure stuff for the suspensions.
Mine is in ther at the mo' for its 80K service
