ST10 DGY

Post by IanR » Tue Sep 20, 2016 8:51 pm

Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum and I'm hoping that someone on here may be able to give me some tips/advice or maybe things I should look out for with this car (RS6 plus avant), I've only had it a couple of months and it didn't come with a manual, I have bought one since as a light on the dash came on I wasn't familiar with - turned out to be adaptive lighting fault which the garage have said they will sort out. Anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know the car by any chance, it's no 421 of 500?
Thanks.

Adaptive light failure will require a whole new replacement light unit... they are about £800 or something silly like that.

As for that specific car, no i have no information on it, If you contact Audi UK they will give you its history and service record if you give them its reg/vin

Things to look out for are - Gearbox fluid change, get this done if it hasnt already been done, neglecting the fluid even though its "lifelong" will dramatically reduce the lifepspan of the box especially if you go stage 2.

Coolant lines - These run under the wheel arch (drivers side) these corrode and can burst, they are an engine out job to replace so check the condition of them and maybe apply some underseal to prolong the life.

Wheel bearing click - common fault, solved by replacing the bearings

Bushes/arms - These are cracking on in age now and can cause knocks and rattles over bumps, a cheaper replacement alternative is Mehle as they do a full kit for around £350 as apposed to Audi's stupid price of £1200+

Oil pump seals from the baffle plate - these can leak and are also an engine out or a replace in situ from certainly places (Unit 20, MRC) but if your coolant lines are looking rough i'd have the engine dropped and the lot replaced

Aux Radiator mounting rubbers - Can go hard and snap allowing your Aux rad to flop around on top of your undertray

DRC Pipework - The most common occurance is the rear pipework rubbing through and causing a loss of fluid, a new pipe and re-gas and your away again.

Thats about all i can think of so far.

Could be the plastic linkage/arm between the sensor and suspension arm broken too which is a nice cheap fix - Clicky for pic

Hi Tom
Thanks for the info will try to get a look at the coolant pipes this weekend weather permitting !

Have been to Audi and got the build sheet and as much service history as they have got but it's got part main dealer part specialist .

Gearbox fluid change can this be done at home or is it a garage job ?

Have wanted an RS6 for a long long time now and apart from the headlight fault which seems to intermittent I'm hoping I've found a good one, and I want to keep it for a very very long time :D :D :D

Hi IAN
Thanks for the diagram should give me some idea if the garage I got the car from tries it on with me

Is it the swivel part or the up and down motion that isnt working?

swivel part is a whole new unit, as Ian said the up and down can be a simple fix.

Regarding gearbox oil change its a garage job unfortunatly unless you have a pump and a ramp to keep the car level during the refill procedure, and its not cheap but is something everyone one on here will say is worthwhile doing, i had mine done at 76k and the difference in gear changes and overall shift quality are amazing.
Make sure the default values are reset on the gearbox too as new fluid means new friction properties so the gearbox must re-learn its shift quailty... i did post a picture of the process a while ago.
I'll dig it out after you get it done so you can run through the process (helps a lot)

USE ONLY ZF Fluid from TPS or reputable ZF dealer, using any other fluid will cause issues and drastically damage the box i think its lifeline6 but Ian will remember better then me.
Fluid and filter must be changed along with the magnets cleaned, be aware the fluid is around £20 a bottle and you'll need 10 bottles to do a proper fluid change, a simple drain and refill will only get about 4 litres of fluid vs the nearly 10 that is actually in there.

Cheers Tom
Will check what service history I've got to see if the box has been done, I think there is an Audi specialist not far from me in Pudsey will give them a ring to get it done and prob a good look round to see if there's anything amiss

Not sure with the headlight thing as it seems to be an intermittent fault as the warning only comes on now and then ! :?

I'm in Pudsey and have a C6 RS6! If your thinking German Car Care don't bother, you have to do the miles to get these cars sorted. Unit20 or MRC or your wasting money.

The adaptive light fault will be intermittent to start then stay on permanently. Just had to have both mine replaced not cheap!!!!!

Hi
Funnily enough I went passed them today and thought about calling in to have a word with them. Have you used them and are they any good ?
