Post by rtd » Wed Aug 03, 2016 7:13 pm

Folks when car is above 50 (and normally when in S mode) when I accelerate hard I get the EPC light come on with warning not to go over 4K revs this has happened a few times now. Anyone experienced anything similar?

VCDS will tell you what it is, most likely a sensor somewhere needs replacing.
Had something similar on a S4 V6T, needed a new oil pressure sensor.

But they aren't applied when the light comes on? Plus they've been coded in.

Yes, I had this. New throttle body, as MRC suspected throttle position sensor which is built into the throttle body, that didn't work, next was some wiring to the ECU, tested hard on dyno, all ok, soon returned... It will occasionally come on again on hard throttle, need to have it back in but been too busy and only done 214 miles in it since Dec, so never been a priority.

Stu - Do you mean the "ESP" (traction control) button as RTD is talking about the EPC (electronic power control warning) which is a dash warning light and a message displayed on the DIS screen telling you of a problem with the car?

If it's ESP you're are asking about then a short press is supposed to "switch off" the traction control system (TCS) only it doesn't fully, it just allows a lot more wheel spin before activating.

If you hold the button down for 3+ seconds it switches the TCS off (completely off this time) and also the ESP (electronic stability program) gets switched off too. The ESP brakes the rear wheels individually to stop the back end moving about under heavy acceleration and braking.

Personally I never found 730hp to be enough power (outside 1st gear or the wet) to cause the TCS to activate when accelerating full throttle in a straight line. However at 900+ a 2nd-3rd full throttle change (with a short press to switch TCS off) still causes the TCS to reactivate when accelerating in a straight line. I found that with a long press the combination of TCS and ESP both being switched off removes *all* TCS (unlike a short press) and you can have full throttle changes with a touch of wheel spin with no problems.
