Same experience with removing the back-boxes etc (at MIJ too!) about 2.5 years ago but the swap to a 3in system made the car sound miles better.IanH755 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2016 10:45 pmI did this and, whilst is sounds quite "mid-rangey" (not very deep at all) at low revs and pretty epic at full throttle, during the cold start it is stupidly loud! I mean you if you stand at the back of the you have to shout to be heard over it, not "raise your voice a bit" I mean SHOUT until the revs die off.
It didn't sound "droney" in the way a Non-Res exhaust does but it was so loud it was definitely intrusive at motorway speeds which, TBF, didn't really bother me that much.
So sounds great but stupidly loud at cold start.

Re: Backbox/muffler delete
Ok had a few tweeks made to the exhaust and im more than chuffed with the result. I had the secondary cats and small middle silencers removed plus new RS3 facelift tips fitted. I left the rear backboxes standard except for the tips.

Re: Backbox/muffler delete
mine's running on custom MIJ (non-res) and it sounds great at speed.
The only downside if i could call it that way is some droning sound that i get at 20-35mph (London driving what can i say ).
