ALOT of blue smoke on cold start

Post by rs6danbar » Fri Jun 17, 2016 10:43 am

Hello RS246 Im new here!

I own a RS6 V10 2008 that has 124K miles on the clock (Lot of maintenance lately but yes it still runs).
Recently the car have been started to pour tremendeous amounts of blue oil smoke on cold starts, and yes it comes from the right exhaust.
Its currently at the workshop to solve the problem, but i dont seem to understand why this occurs?
It runs great, doesnt take much oil either. It smokes maybe 1 of 4 cold starts and when it does its alot and as soon as it stops smoking after maybe 5 minutes theres no sign of that it ever been smoking that much!
Cant be valve stem seals, theres way too much smoke... Been reading something about the oil return on the right side of the engine is bad on the early RS6's, what does that mean? Workshop is thinking the oil comes from the crankcase ventilation, what do you guys think?

Other then that the car runs great with that much on the clock, still goign strong!

At start up, oil in a cylinder gets burned off quickly - few seconds and it's gone (usually). But a little bit of oil can produce a hell of a lot of smoke for a long time if it's being heated rather than burned so I'd suspect that you've got oil getting into the exhaust rather than a cylinder. When I was a kid Hornby used to make train sets with engines that produced 'real' smoke - you put a couple of drops of light oil on a cotton wad that was heated by an electric element (probably banned now for H&S), the things would smoke for ages.

When it smokes has it been parked up for longer than other times (like 2-3 days instead of overnight)? Just wondering if it takes a while for the oil to build up to a noticeable level.

Its enough with over night, sometimes smoke, sometimes doesnt!

I also wouldn't have thought 124k is too high a mileage as well...am not sure whether Audi engines are as reliable as BMW ones (I suspect they are) and they are pretty good for 2-300k miles! The V10 seems a pretty bombproof bit of kit if maintained correctly

hi there
mine has done that exact issue and after a year I have finally found out from (ricky RE Performance) that its worn turbo seals ?? it drips into the pipework when the car lays overnight , when the car is active the seal will contain the oil as its spinning at high revolutions ,but when it stops and seals cool it will drip until there is enough & then gets drawn into the fuel intake and burns off in the cylinders & finally exhaust housing . sounds like its only 1 side for you . regards tony

Ofcourse not im not afraid of 124K miles or 20000mil as we say in sweden, i think the Audi V10 is as reliable as the bmw V10, but ofcourse all natural aspired engines last longer :audibash:

Yeah i read your threads, Yeah it only affects the right side, left side aswell when its unbeliavble amounts then it goes over to only the right.
Whats the solution? New Turbo's or can you repair the ones fitted already?

ALOT of blue smoke on cold start

Post by stevo55 » Fri Jun 17, 2016 6:25 pm

Couple of comparison videos for you on cold start-my old M135i that had an Eisenmann quad exhaust back box and the current RS6. Both cold starts in winter /spring and in the morning. The BM chucked out a lot more than the RS as you can see! I'd consider getting it looked at as it does seem excessive. Having said that the R8 video was also acting like a Challenger 2 tank on smoke discharge!
