Dilemma

Post by njm rs6 » Tue Sep 01, 2015 6:27 pm

Not sure ive come to the right place really because I fairly sure what everyone here will say but here goes....

Im in 2 minds over which car to buy or even start looking at, having owned a c5 I love the idea of owning a c6 and have always hankered after one. Ive just bought a house so have had permission fron the boss to buy a car, I have around 30k to spend but dont want to be spending c5 money on servicing and repairs ( spent around £8k in a year)

For the same money and with my sensible trousers on I could get the newer c7 bitdi, I prefer the interior of the c7 and I like the idea of similar pace to the c5 but with 45mpg and being a diesel will probably be as reliable as a wood burning stove . I also like that it will probably be slightly more comfortable than the c6, have more kit and (in my opinion) looks better.

BUT you cant get away from the 750hp (tuned) rocketship V10 monster that is the c6 ive wanted one ever since hammond tested one in the alps on top gear. Plus it wouldnt be a daily, more of a weekend car and from what ive seen far far far more reliable than my old c5.

This leads me on to my first question, are they as reliable as im lead to believe? Ive looked through the forum and in the last year can only find a handful of issues. Is this because most are under warranty so are just taken to audi to be fixed regardless of cost?

Another point worth noting is that I think the c6 will depreciate much slower than the bitdi

So what do you guys think, take the gamble and hope that its as reliable as im lead to believe or take the safe bet and go over to the dark side?

They are very reliable. I was in the same situation after owning my C5 for 5 years and shelling out too much to keep her tip-top.

C6 is better car in every way. I've had mine for 12 months and had nothing go wrong apart from clicking wheel bearings.

Buy one with reasonable mileage that has been regularly serviced and you'll be fine. V10 twin turbo monster. Never to be repeated. Ever.

Go for it!

OP, it feels to me like your heart is ruling your head here and you know what you should do already, lol.

You've got your house sorted, check
Permission from the boss, check
30k budget on a C6, check

The question only you can answer is will you be happy with a bog standard 6 with the paltry ~570 bhp or do you want to mod and have a monster?

If you are ok with standard, go for it

But if you want a monster id say wait until you have more cash behind you, even if you buy one sorted, last thing you want is it sat in the garage as a reminder of what you shouldve done and your misses moaning!

C7 diesel no doubt a decent motor, but id rather a C6 RS over that every day

Cheers guys, seems pretty unanimously in favour of the RS which to be hoest is what I was hoping!

As commented I may save a while longer and wait to get the perfect car ive seen a red one that has everything I want bar the ceramics but its 6k over budget and im really after a blue or grey saloon.

I would be after one thats been mapped with milltek as from what I can tell it makes no difference to the reliability of the car.

I've had 2 x C5's over 6 years and now a C6. All driven the same way and looked after to the same standard. The C6 is the cheapest RS I've owned from a maintence point of view and a cost per mile to run. It is a no brainier: get one: end of
Currently floating along in a 2020 Magnetic Grey Bentley Continental GT & bouncing around in a Navarro S3 black edition
2009 C6 Avant NR Milly, MRC Stage 2/gearbox, MTM 21'' bimotos, H&R arb's, KW coil overs, 756ps & 1085 Nm (now in Simon’s safe hands)
C5 RS6+ No 315 in Metallic Silver (gone but never to be forgotten)

Thanks for all the responses, think i may be taking the plunge soon ive really missed the C5 over the past few months so looking forward to getting back into an RS now!

Think the B8 is probably off the cards its a bit too pricey just now plus I get the feeling it will be worth half that in 4 years were as the C6 residues seem pretty strong at the moment.

Johnsimister send me over the specs of yours I wasnt going to go for a black one, im a bit of a clean freak and black cars tend to look dirty again 20 mins after you've washed them! But having said that if the specs right im not gona let colour get in the way....

So you like your motors, you're reasonably sensible and you're comfortable (hence the dilemma) but not super rich. Bit like me.

I bought one, but bought approved used with a warranty. The plan is to keep it standard and renew the warranty. The other option is obviously to mod it and scrap the warranty. Part of me wants to do the latter, but part of me wants the peace of mind that the Audi warranty provides me with. That's the real dilemma.

"You only live once" - ok so scrap the warranty and stage 2 the damn thing. But what if something serious goes wrong with the car (such as I don't know), but I'm guessing say a new gear box doesn't come cheap. I had a 996 Turbo a few years back. I could afford the car, the fuel, the insurance, but not sure I could find £12k for a gearbox so again I had an approved warranty on it.

My last car, a BMW 535D GT had a problem with the panoramic sunroof blind. £1500. Thankfully the warranty covered it.

I realise this isn't really what you asked is it? I guess I just recognise where you're coming from and trying to help. So in a nutshell my answer is follow your heart and get one. Buy an approved used one and play it by ear.

Buy one that's been looked after.... a cheap/ Dog a car with warranty doesn't mean shittttt IMO.

A C6 even when tuned is bullet proof to an extent but you have to keep on top of it ( doing extra maintenance on top of Audi's recommendations) then you'll be alright.

My car is tuned to the max and touch wood, Ive not even changed a single wheel bearing so it all comes down to buying the right car even if you have to pay more than the average joes in the market.
Too much power is barely enough.

Yea I make you guys right that was sort of going to be the plan, buy the best car I can even if its a few grand more id rather pay it now than tripple that in repair bills later.

Im in no rush so I can look at plenty, you never know MR V10 might suddenly decide he wants to buy a micra and pop his for sale for a cheeky 30k.... not likely but hey a guy can dream!

Funnily enough I was also looking at a 996 turbo but lack of space in the back put me off plus I doubt it would be as comfortable on longer journeys with me, the mrs and luggage on board.

I found it easily as comfortable, if not more comfortable than the RS6 and luggage space is ok. The seat backs of the rear seats fold down to create like a "shelf". That's how I used to have them. Great for slinging a couple of bags on. Up front there is room for a couple more towards the back of the luggage compartment (nearest the windscreen) then as the bonnet slopes down you can fit you wash bag and a couple of pairs of loafers.

If it were me, and I could have a 2 door car, I'd have a 997 Turbo. But we have two kids and a dog. So I have to settle for an RS6. I know, tell me about it...
