I can't either
Re: Gear knob upgrade
The procedure is called 'Heat & Twist' and is common among all Audi with the auto box.
Essentially, the procedure is lifting off the old gear knob to expose the plastic shaft that it sits on. Because the original shift button is on the side, and the new one is at the front, the plastic shaft is facing the wrong direction in relation to the new forward facing shift button. Fortunately the shaft is made of soft plastic and can easily be heated-up and twisted until it faces the right direction. Sounds scary, but is quite straightforward.

The only advice is to go slow and take your time. Apply heat progressively and not too close, or you risk burning/melting the shaft.
Good luck

Re: Gear knob upgrade
The metal clip that gets replaced with a zip tie in the first link can be replaced with a small CV joint boot clip, I fixed the gear knob in my daughter's boyfriend's Golf a few months back with a clip that was left over from another job.

Just to revive this...
Will any RS shifter from the same era fit? (specifically the gaiter)

Re: Gear knob upgrade
Answered my own question here. The shift knob and gaiter from a B8 RS4 fit perfectly, the aperture is exactly the same size. The only difference being the plastic trim that the leather gaiter is stapled to - the clips are in a different position. I carefully removed the staples and swapped them over and it's all done, an easy job to do.
(I preferred the gaiter from the RS4 as the stitching is light grey to match the stitching on my seats)
