New Boots

Post by LukasPukas » Wed Feb 18, 2015 12:49 pm

Any opinions on best tyres?

Tread is getting low, so it is about time I grabbed some new boots. There is the odd bit of advice around the net, but nothing massively conclusive.

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/ ... nt-V10.htm

I have traditionally stuck with Continental Sport Contacts, but aren't generally considered the best these days anyways, looks like I am in for something new.

My initial shortlist is:

Pirelli P Zero – have heard good things, but in previous cars I have always accused these of tramlining (probably incorrectly…)
Michelin Pilot Sport 2/3 – It currently has PS2’s on and have no complaints, PS3’s seem to have a good rep, but not sure if they are available
Dunlop SP SPortmaxx GT – the standard, but have heard others are better

What are people recommending?

PS2's are a good all rounder, PS3's are a harder compound for more mileage. I'm using Pilot Super Sports on my C5 which are incredible in the warm and dry, not so grippy in the cold & wet but to be fair no tyre will be great i guess.

I can 't speak for the other tyres on your list.

Acquired mine with Dunlop SP SportMaxx GT's on but swapped out to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 which are night and day better in all conditions as well as being quieter. I have the 275/35 ZR20 102Y XL size on my OEM wheels. Unfortunately Goodyear do not make the correct tire size to fit my MTM Bimotos so just about to re boot those with Michelin PSS 285 / 30 / ZR21 100Y XL so will be interesting to compare the two. Goodyear Asymms on the OEM are the way forward.

Cheers for the info to both of you.

Wasn't aware they did the Goodyears in the 275/35, have always heard good things, so will add those to the list as well!

I changed from dunlops to Pirelli pzeros and the difference is night and day, slightly more road noise but much better steering and input.

My old RS6 had Pirelli's on it most of its life - cant go wrong with them to be honest .. last set I tried the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2.. same ride, grip maybe a little quieter, cant compare wear between the two as I sold the car just a few K miles after changing to the Goodyears

Ha, but then you are forgetting the fuel bills compared to the Tesla and the fact that there is no insane mode and that I had to fight my sat nav all the way home on a tiny screen hidden in the dash!

Having said that, I do love that sound... :rocker:

Looks like there isn't much to pick between Goodyears, PS2/3's and P-Zeros. Maybe I will just let availability/pricing decide which goes on.

Thanks again for tyres G, the wheels truely are immaculate and could pass for new. Probably the only person over the age of 10 in Sussex now hoping for snow!

Well I'm hoping for snow too, firstly because I'm a big child but secondly I want to have a play with the winter tyres in the snow too. I've found my Sottozeros to be a bit of a let down in the cold but when we did have a bit of snow a couple of weeks ago I was very pleasantly surprised as to how good they were.

I've got Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my summer wheels and I love them, great grip in all summer conditions wet and dry. I need a new set and will be buying some soon when the winters need to come off.

I use Pirelli P-Zero Nero on mine and found them to be great even with my power. The wear rate on them is surprisingly good too.

Hope this helps.

Michelin Pilot Super Sports for me.
Great tyre and good wear in 'normal driving'.
15 laps (75 kms) of Philip Island track in the barge does wear the tyres though.
cheers,

I'm just about to buy new boots - pilot super sports

£860 seems to be the cheapest I can get a full set. Anyone know anywhere cheaper before I pull the trigger?

Cheers!

Would you benefit from pilot cup 2's on something that powerful I wonder? Would be worse in the wet.. But epic on the ring!

Tyres are still on 3-4mm I just don't like them. Service was 1800 miles or 180 days away when I bought it - but I love the car so much i've done 1400 miles in the two weeks since buying it. And the front end isn't bad - it's just not to my anal standards - nonetheless, the stonechips did get me a grand off the asking price. So - all round, I'm happy - but thanks for thinking of me :bigwave:
