Any diagnosis for this ?

Post by leehewitt » Mon Jan 05, 2015 6:37 pm

Right team here's one for ya
Collected car earlier from local Indy following a full service once gearbox spark plugs etc and in preparation for mapping I have primary cats gutted.
Now here's the thing when I nail it in 1st, instead of the "thwack" as it hits the Rev limiter, there's a sudden loss of power before finding 2nd gear? This happens in D and S mode ?
I did see the TL come on so disengaged the ESP altogether and it still does it.

Although it will be returned tomorrow any thoughts are welcome ??? :bash:

Did it only happen after the service?

And you say gearbox oil was changed during the service?

Oh dear.... maybe gearbox oil change NOT completed as per FULL instruction which takes about 5-6 hours or not enough oil.

DO NOT push the car until you get it checked out properly.

BTW, where did you get the gearbox oil changed?.
Too much power is barely enough.

The local audi independant has had the car since 21 Dec and only picked up today so he had better spent 4/5 hours as per instruction. When looking for said Indy using my knowledge from here when I asked him re all the work he gave right answers.

I'm assuming their Vagcom will bring up fault codes tomorrow ?

Could be a brief overboost, that cuts the ignition to prevent damage. You've removed the cats, turbos will be spooling up quicker, when booting it and keeping it floored, it may build up boost quicker than the standard map/wastegate setting expects and exceed safe limits (i.e. as stuck wastegate). Obviously this gets changed with a remap, but you don't say that's been done. Low fluid issues usually exhibit at lower revs, not at 4K+ when there's plenty of gearbox oil pressure. If they've trapped <beep> in the valve body the box will feel odd on all changes. If it's your locals, there's probably sand in there......................

Hi Catfood,

In addition to the Pri CAT removal, I also have BMC filters and have changed spark plugs for lower operating temp ones ()as advised by my intended mapper) in prep for mapping so prey that its related to this scenario rather than the gearbox, which under normal conditions operates as i'd expect.

Kent_Andy - I had no issues prior to the work being carried out so fingers crossed its to do with the ECU being out of tolerance as Catfoode suggests. To be fair my contact at the garage has been really good so far, so hopefully when we get together their diagnostic tool should give me some indication. :?

Although I should get some feedback later today, any ideas if this can be done without mapping?

That's doesn't have anything to do with the gearbox. Its because the mods you have done.

The car is definitely rich now because you have removed the primary cats, as well as the spark plugs, colder spark plugs are used to go for more timing advance in the tune so maybe the car is going more advance but the ecu doesn't allow it to keep the car at safety parameters. If you put back the original spark plugs the car should be fine otherwise you have to go for a remap.

If the spark plugs are too cold for the car then it will cause a cylinder misfire for sure.

all the best,

Ahmed

Hi Ahmed, Happy new year

Ive been at the garage and they have tweaked the car to avoid the loss of power. I'm not able to put the original spark plugs in but as you said its not the GB thank god, but they confirmed / suggested the same, ie get the Mapping done asap to get the thing set up properly.

Having spoken to your man Nasser, as you intimated, a knowledgeable chap with our beasts, the countdown has begun, so thanks again for his details.

Thanks to all and hopefully my next post will be some even better news of engine / GB map results :biggrin3:

PS I cant wait to hunt down the local CTS V and ZL1 who at present are giving me a run for my money :nodder: - Not that condone street racing in any way :bigblink:

Hi Lee,

Happy new year to you too !
Trust me, once you get your car mapped, the CTS-V and the ZL1 will be no longer your concern unless if they are heavily modified.
If you want to remove the secondary cats as well, then there are some front pipes from supersprint which are mine but I removed them when I fitted the full 3'' catless downpipes. they are direct bolt on, if you are interested I will speak to Nasser and ask him to give you the pipes. You should be getting another 30 to 35 HP more with those front pipes. You can take them for free

Ahmed, you're a legend buddy, thank you very much :biggrin3: I have however experienced the dropping of power again since having returned the vehicle to me. Having taken it to DAS where Nasser suggested, using their diagnostics, we are now changing the battery as its low on volts / amps which would, under full load, cause same issue. Fingers crossed that its not the alternator (which also showed up), as this would be far more costly / time consuming. Once resolved then ill get straight onto the pipes.

Thanks again buddy and deffo need to thank you in person once this roller coaster of financial emotions is over.

Wish me luck :?

Lee,

If the problem didn't go after changing the battery, then ask them to check the alternator's belt. the alternator can hardly fail but the belt sometimes slips which leads the alternator not to recharge properly or continuously which can also make your battery die.
the belt isn't costly, maybe something around 200 dhs only, its a small belt.

Best of luck buddy!

Hey Ahmed...

Which spark plugs do you use? Any problems on 8xxhp?

Greetings
