As some of you might know I've recently picked up a C6 RS6 Avant. After a couple of weeks of ownership, I can honestly say that this is the best car I've owned for comfort, performance, feel good factor, etc. I met up with Trups on Saturday morning to buy and have fitted his old custom zorst…..thanks Trups. All I can say is that my fuel consumption has suddenly taken a drastic dive!!! Due to a miscommunication error, the secondary cats were unfortunately left in, but nevertheless the sound improvement is extremely noticeable. The car has such a nice deep tone to it now and the noise on upshifts at full boost is addictive. I'm sure that within a few weeks I'll be going back to take out the cats.

I've been enjoying the RS6 on weekends so much, that it has however had a negative impact. Before I bought the RS6, I used to get my kicks from my SLK55 but decided to sell it as there were a few big ticket items coming up on it (c£1500 for front floating discs alone!). The plan was to keep driving my daily hack, a Smart ForTwo, whilst the wife drove the RS6 during the week. You can imagine how slow and boring it is jumping from a RS6 to a Smart!

So yesterday afternoon I started looking for another daily driver. I test drove a 3.4 Cayman S, but was actually very disappointed in it. It felt heavy, road noise was terrible and it just didn't feel special…they are supposed to be lovely, so maybe I just test drove a dud?? So just to kill some time today, I viewed an '08 plate BMW 135i Coupe. This is the 3 litre twin turbo model with about 300bhp. It had a lot of OEM Performance bits on it including bodykit, suspension, brakes, wheels, zorst, illuminated door sills & some carbon bits and bobs. By comparison to the Cayman, the car was nimble, felt more solid, and was pretty rapid….in short, it was an absolute hoot to drive. After some pretty heavy negotiations, I paid a deposit and will hopefully pick up the car by next weekend.

If all goes to plan, once I send the RS6 to MRC and the 135 somewhere else (need to do more research), I should have 1100bhp combined to play with

PS If anyone is sitting on the fence as to whether to upgrade your car, I have a low mileage Smart for sale

Good choice, also, send the 135 to MRC. They've tuned BMW '35i engines, too.

I shouldn't have posted so soon......

Was due to pick up the car tomorrow. The chap called me yesterday to tell me the temperature warning light came on. Turns out his water pump failed. I've decided to pull out of the deal, as he was a bit vague about how long it took him to notice the warning light, and how much longer he drove it for.

Currently negotiating on another 135i, this time a vert. Although the verts are slower, this one's had an upgraded intercooler, worst, induction system and a device called a Cobb Accessport (or something like that). Basically a remapping device that you plug into your OBD port. So it should be pretty rapid from day one. It also benefits from a BMW warranty which is always adds peace of mind.

Anyway, still loving the RS6. Due to pending 135i purchase, remapping of the 6 is currently on hold.

Cobb's are excellent, very user friendly I've got one for the gtr

Doing more research on the net, they seem to be really popular devices on the BMW scene and some other marques.

Does anyone here use them on their RS? It seems to be quite useful in that you can remap the car yourself back to stock whenever you want, plus play with a few other maps which come with the units (specific to types of modifications done). I guess they aren't as good as remapping a car on a dyno specific to your vehicle, but for the cost and fun factor they seem pretty good.

It's okay….when I'm feeling that I'm wearing too many pink items of clothing I can always jump back in the RS for a dose of testosterone

You can have your car mapped on the dyno via Cobb mate it's not just generic maps. Mines was mapped that way then fine tuned at vmax event. Really handy they act as a fault finder and code eraser also

Are you saying that I could for example go to MRC and save their map for my car onto the cobb? That would mean that I could up it to the mrc map at c750bhp, go back to stock if I want to, or go to any of the generic maps? That would be ideal for me. Or do I have to go to a cobb dealer/workshop for them to add a custom map onto it? Thanks

Would have to be someone with experience with Cobb. I'm sure Mrc have done Cobb cars though, not sure if they just loaded generic maps up and dyno'd them. No harm in asking. It's a great tool, I have various maps stored in it I can use at any time

One further question. From what I've read you can only use the cobb on one car. Do you know anything about this? It'd be great if I could load various maps for both my cars.

It'll be specific to that model of car, ie mines is for a 60 plate gtr. There is a brand new version of the Cobb that's just been released I'm not too clued up on wether it's different or not thiugh

Picked up the 135i today and have already started playing with the different maps. From what I have played with so far, I agree that these are a pretty cool little device.

Is it the older Cobb with the smaller screen?
