Black smoke

Just recently the car seems to have taken a longer to turn over from cold and this morning it did the same and when I blipped the throttle a cloud of blackish smoke came out the exhausts. Any ideas?
39,000 miles FASH service due dec. plugs supposedly done at my request when I bought the car from Coulsden Audi (I am a bit suspicious of this and not entirely sure they did it, main dealer or not).

Check your battery % from MMI when you start her up next to see if the battery is low on juice.

Let the car idle for at least 30 seconds before revving it to see if you still have the black smoke.

Scan the car with Vag Com if you have one to hand.

Have any if you travelled behind another RS6 giving it the beans? I did recently and was amazed how much black <beep> came out of the exhausts on full-beans red-line up shifts. It didn't smell like blue smoke does, it seemed more sooty than anything else...certainly explains how dirty the chrome tips get.

Black smoke is usually fuel/over-fuelling.

It'll happen from cold on start-up if you give the engine a blip as the mixture is already rich to get the cats up to temp. It'll also do it on full-bore upshifts as you are at the top of the rev range, and already dumping a lot of fuel into the engine, and the ignition <beep> (which causes the fart sound) means you'll have a rich mixture again as the gear changes.

If it was white, or blue, you'd want to worry.

I have had the same, seems worse when its been standing for a week or so. As Chris says, clearing its throat. Seems regular excercise is a way to keep to a min.

I agree on this, I let my mate take mine and I tried to keep up behind in his C63 and it was like been behind a diesel without a DPF.

When I first test drove an RS6 I gave it some beans and when I looked in the mirror it was like black fog!
My car now sometimes gives a slight "fart" of black smog under really hard load - like WOT 2nd to 3rd but its just the excess fuel mixture - nothing to worry about.

As for at start up - with the cold temps I guess it might take a second longer to fire - hence more fuel?
I noticed my car seemed to take a bit longer to start now its colder. It also feels a bit "rougher" in the cold for its first 30 seconds as it tries to get heat into the cats.

Off topic slightly but where is the battery % on the MMI? Had a good look for it today and couldn't find it...have to say wasn't aware it was there. Is this a 3G only thing?

Yes it does exactly the same. Think you need Vag Com to enable it.

Trups, can I ask what the c6 rs6 vs c63 experience was like? Audi quicker but Merc more engaging for example?
