I bought 4 Rims with winter tyres from Audi back in Feb 2011, never had cause to use them last year as all we needed was water wings in the south, however as they are forecasting sleet/snow and cold weather for the area for the next few weeks, I popped down to storage place at lunch time picked them up and changed the wheels.. Car looks wierd (to me) on the 5-segment spoke standard Audi rims as I normally have the 7 spoke ones
Tyres are Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D 265/35 ZR20 99V XL .. went for a 10 mile drive just to check balance etc and they seem pretty quiet road noise wise etc

Dare I ask how much that set cost? I have thinking this myself but so far the weather hasn't been looking too bad, nice week could be different though......

£3490.00 Including Vat from Audi - I ordered them in Oct 2010 and had them delivered in March 2011 .. So fingers crossed you dont have a delivery lag like me
When I looked at the price .. Mytres sold those tyres for 395 then I added on approx 100 quid a rim for the TPMS units
So worked out as 495 a corner, which is 1980 for 4 . so the rims came in around 1500 for 4 or 377 (ish) a rim..
I guess not that "bad" for Audi

For dealer supplied that isn't too bad, if you say it quickly! Not an ideal time lag there considering when you ordered and for the purpose! Might have a pop over to eBay.de and see what they have listed.

3.5k for wheels with winter tyres?
Do you really need them?...on a car that's Quattro anyway?
Surely a few days snow doesn't bring you to a standstill!

Or keep existing rims and get winter tyres and switch over winter.

re standstill .. no .. we all know pretty much all the Audi quattro's are immensely capable in South UK snow any way .. But its about increasing MY and my family's safety .. pay your money take your chances .. I'll pay mine and take mine..
re swapping tyres onto existing rims .. dont like stretching them on /off needlessly

Despite living in the South I am a big fan of winter wheels and have them on the RS4 from November to March as the rubber works better than summer tyres which don't work so well below 7 degrees Celsius.
I bought mine via german ebay lightly used and view it as "cost neutral" as store them in the garage, change them over myself and it saves wear on the summer tyres as well as vastly improving braking in the cold & wet.
As for quattro - that will get you going but won't help you stop without grip...

Even quattro needs some grip in order to work. Remember the RS4 has no LSD's (apart from the centre one) so if one front and one rear has no grip then you are going nowhere (unless the brakes help out but not sure they do).
A RWD on decent snow tyres would leave a quattro on summer tyres standing.

The best way of slowing down in the snow is engine braking so quattro is technically slightly better able to cope.
But I do agree, it's no substitute for winter tyres.
