Greetings

Well, I can confess I am the buyer of V10 BVE! I bought it on the strength of the photos and description by the auction house (foolish) and that Grizz would (reportedly) vouch for it. I was a little surprised to find that it's a complete respray - then again, it's a reasonably good respray, wheels have been restored and it does look very smart. It also soon became evident that there must have been fairly comprehensive damage, since as pointed out, the whole front end shows signs of dismantling. The mileage I'm not so sure about - it does have MOT records to support it most of the way. I chatted with Kendrick who never mentioned any of the respray/previous damage, but did think the mileage was kosher.

However, on the good side, it drives very nicely (well, it does now). When I first bought it, I put it in the garage and left it for a few months due to weather and mud. I took it out on the first fine/dry day and immediately noted the centre bearing had gone - plus the front discs were lipped. I've grown quite attached to the car simply because it drives so well and everything electrical works OK - well, it does now I've installed a new battery.

Fortunately, I have a large workshop, four-post ramp, and experience of building kit-cars and restoring classics, so the propshaft was easy to remove and I've bought new O/E discs all round, together with O/E pads. What with the coronavirus lockdown, I've plenty to keep me occupied - watch this space...... It was a rather 'spur of the moment' buy that I'll doubtless regret financially, though I'm quite enjoying myself with it at the moment

Congratulations and welcome to the forum! Sounds like a good car found a good home.

How's your 4 post lift? I have one as well, and having thought it was the answer to all my wishes, it always seems to be in the way.....

I have a theory that RS6's are usually bought by RS246 members, or people who then became members....

Nick

Thanks Nick,

Have you any propshaft experience? I've found that the pattern part centre bearing replacements, made in Poland, have been made incorrectly - the bearing rubber 180 degrees around. I'm also finding difficulty in sourcing the middle CV boot. No signs of a recon shaft complete being available, and don't really want to buy a whole new Audi unit for the sake of a centre bearing.

Not to deviate from the propshaft question, congrats on your purchase, as a new RS6 owner (but to Nicks point an existing forum member and RS4 owner) I share the excitement that is owning such a car coupled with the pontential for the odd eye watering bill. Good luck with it, keep us updated! Kristian

There's a couple of "UK made" centre bearings on eBay -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Propshaft-Ce ... SwXAFd0E4Y

Disclaimer - No idea why the huge difference in Price (£40 vs £75) and no idea about the quality of each either.

It's a 30mm x 15mm rubber bearing, most generic propshaft shops should be able to get you one and press it into the old housing.

Thanks for the links Ian,

Although both eBay sellers are Brit establishments, they both use the Polish made replacement. Both photos show that the bearing is the wrong way round in the bracket. I actually bought the £75 one on the basis it would be better quality, but it's actually the same as the cheaper one. The thickness of the metal bracket is also substantially thinner than O/E. Rather than being pressed in, they appear to be vulcanised into the metal 'frame'. When I get a chance, I'll put up a photo of my solution. I have currently had to use a rubber boot for the centre CV joint, which I would dearly like to change for the metal shrouded one.

Funnily enough, there is a photo of one on Amazon sold by 'Solaris' that is correct, but is unavailable.

Nick - yes, the four poster is somewhat in the way, but the workshop is 30' by 30', so not too shabby in terms of space. Room for a car each side, as well as on the ramp. It's really the number of vehicles in there that get in the way!!

I was a little depressed reading the details of the inspection carried out, but, having done a few of those myself, the inspector's job is always to paint the very worst picture of the vehicle, so if it all goes wrong they can always say 'I told you so'. For instance, the 'multiple engine oil leaks' was only one that had spread out, over time, to exit from different areas of the under tray. Actually two loose-ish torx screws on the engine underside, so that was easily sorted. With there having been a recent oil change at Unit 20, and the oil leak evidently long standing, I was surprised they hadn't dealt with it. I was also surprised to find the oil cooler on the underside of the engine hanging off - supported on the undertray. Someone must have known, since they'd removed the lower section of the fractured rubber mounting bobbin bolted to the cooler. Anyway, these are details that occurred before my ownership, so I'm not going to slag anyone off. I remain of the view that for most things, I'll do the work myself (with a little help from this forum), take my time and do it carefully. This is, on reflection, the first Audi I have owned, but I'm now a convert. I've always hated Audi's - mostly because of their drivers, if you know what I mean. I enjoy driving around, using my indicators, letting other drivers pull out of side turnings, and maintaining a healthy distance from the car in front..........Am I letting the side down?
