I solved this by moving onto an "SP Electronics" hard case with one of their sticky plastic mounts stuck onto the phone holder: it works a treat and will provide everything you require (a phone case to protect your phone plus a way of attaching your phone to the holder without removing it from its case).
Sadly I have the S20 FE which isn't on their site and it's a different size to every other S20 but that looks to be a good design.

Regarding the plastic tool: I've used it successfully in two cars: 997 and RS6; it just opens a *small* gap wide enough for the holder to enter the first 2mm of the trim, you then push the holder in further to seat it correctly.
Yeah, mine doesn't open any gap at all no matter how hard I push the tool into the gap. In fact it actually feels like the tool hits a "stop" just a few millimetres deep into the gap which stops you pushing the tool any further, which then stops the wedge shape from opening the gap and you can't use it to "pry" the trim forward to make a gap either as the plastic is too weak/flexible.

I've tried it on other bits of trim and the tool does work, just not exactly where I need it too. It's like the "leather" cowling on the left is too rigid to be pushed away from the plastic trim piece.

Take Two - Using a couple of flatblade screwdrivers I managed to fit the base plate so I can at least use the current holder temporarily until some different parts come in and I'll just swap the phone in/out of the case for the time being.

I think i can provide my experience which i am using right now in Taiwan.

My RS6 is 2009 2G model. After surfing on the net, i found there is one Chinese company www.joyeauto.com which provide apple CarPlay solution for MMI 2G. they also provide audi other series line solution. you can take a look.

i have bought it late last year and it works so well with either WIFI or USB enable only no touch screen. and it can activate Siri using button on the console. you can see the link above to know more.

It is installed under the glove box and no further extra cables needed. there is YouTube channel in English FYI.

I believe many stereo company in US, UK and also AU are using their solution.
